Boy, has 2020 been a wild ride. Now that we have it behind us, we can start looking forward to what the new year will bring. We all have so many concerns, aspira- tions and resolutions, because as you know, this is the time of year when we decide to make those big changes in our lives. That’s why in 2021, the Lane County Master Re- cyclers have created this monthly article to educate and inspire all of you about making environmen- tally sustainable changes in your world. We are calling it Closing the Loop, because a circular re- generative economy is what will drive innovation, resource sta- bility and cleaner communities. So we hope you will join us in our quest to Close the Loop and change our relationship with too much stuff! Looking ahead into 2021, we are proud to announce three upcoming Recycling Take Back Events hosted by EcoGeneration, a Cottage Grove based non-profit organization whose primary goal is to keep as much waste out of the landfill as possible. Through the various recycling collection streams, they will provide the res- idents of Florence an opportunity to recycle more than just the typi- cal “co-mingle” waste. Besides collecting the clean, dry, label free number 2, 4 and 5 plas- tics as we have in the past, we now have the ability to recycle number 1 PET bottles and jugs (containers with a screw top lid). Community Foundation grant applications due Friday Western Lane Community Foundation (WLCF) contin- ues to accept applications to its 2021 grant cycle. The application can be found at wlcfonline.org. Grant requests for the 2021 grant cycle will be ac- cepted until Jan. 15. Each year, WLCF awards several grants to local non-profit organizations for projects/programs in its target area of western Lane County. Grants are award- ed in the areas of education, medicine and science, the arts, and social and civic ser- vices. In 2020, over $87,000 was awarded to several of these worthy causes. The an- nual amount to be awarded is determined by the perfor- mance of the invested port- folio of discretionary funds during the current year. The application may be downloaded at WLCF’s web- site, where applicants can review the Grant Guidelines included there. People can submit applications to West- ern Lane Community Foun- dation, P.O. Box 1589, Flor- ence, OR, 97439 or by email to wlcf@wlcfonline.org in PDF format. Completed applications must be postmarked or re- ceived no later than close of business on Jan. 15. Applications will be re- viewed by the Board of Di- rectors and each applicant will be contacted by a Board Member for an interview regarding the request for funds. Grant requests and awards will be selected based on merit, need, and benefit to the community at large.
