2A | SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 2020 | SIUSLAW NEWS On The Record Florence Police warn area residents of recent email, phone scam efforts Multiple Florence resi- dents have reported being contacted by individuals via telephone or email ad- vising them they have been defrauded, and they need to repay the financial institu- tion. These payments are facil- itated by the victim buying prepaid credit or gift cards and providing redemption information to the sus- pect(s) over the phone or via email. Similar incidents have been reported in the past in Lane County. Citizens are reminded that this is not legitimate activity and financial insti- tutions do not utilize this method to collect official payments. Citizens are encouraged to hang up the phone if they suspect a scam, and report scams to your local law en- forcement agency. Calls asking for payment through untraceable meth- ods such as prepaid cards, gift cards, or other cash cards, are probably a scam. Calls that use scare tac- tics, timelines, or pressure you to send money quickly, are also likely scams. There have also been two other recent reports of scams: • One where the sus- pect(s) will offer to “fix” an issue if you give them remote access to your com- City of Florence accepting applications for council seat The City of Florence is seeking interested parties to fill a vacancy on the City Council for a term expiring Dec. 31, 2022. Applicants need to have resided within the Florence City limits for at least one year prior to appointment and be a registered voter. Members of the Florence City Council are the policy and decision-making lead- ers for the City of Florence, providing oversite to the City Manager and the Mu- nicipal Court Judge. The council provides decision making through at public City Council meetings and direction given to the City Manager. Service on the City Coun- cil is a voluntary position. The city council meets regularly on the first and third Mondays of the month at 5:30 p.m., and in work sessions currently sched- uled for the first and third Monday’s at 10:30 a.m. In addition, Florence City Councilors serve as ex-offi- cio members on one or more City committees and often represent Florence at many different events and groups. Anyone interested in serv- ing on the city council can download an application at www.ci.florence.or.us. Applications are due by 5 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 18. Applications will be re- viewed by the city council in early January and may be in- vited to interviews with the Council the week of Jan. 11 or 18. COUNTY, STATE COVID-19 STATS Lane County Public Health (LCPH) — (As of Nov. 20) Lane County Public Health notified of 94 addi- tional positive COVID-19 cases since yesterday (Nov. 18). This makes a total of 3,594 cases. Lane County remains on the governor’s Watch List according to state metrics on COVID-19 spread. • 3,594 (+94) total cases (Note: that this includes confirmed and presump- tive.) Of cases confirmed and presumptive: • Hospitalized: 24 (+8) • ICU: 4 (of the 24) • Deaths: 37 (+1) • Infectious 416 (+41) • Persons being moni- tored: 665 • COVID-19 cases by zip code as of Nov. 19 — 97439: 38 For data regarding Lane County testing, patient status, case ZIP codes and more is available at www. LaneCountyOR.gov/local- data Latest deaths: • Lane County Public Health was notified that a 70-year old woman from the Eugene/Springfield area passed away yester- day (11/16) due to com- plications associated with COVID-19. She was not hospitalized at the time of her death. Oregon Health Authority (OHA) — (As of Nov. 20 at noon) The Oregon Health Au- thority reported the largest daily number of COVID-19 cases and deaths since the beginning of the pandemic in Oregon, surpassing the 800th COVID-19 death — less than three weeks after marking the 700th death. COVID-19 claimed 20 more lives in Oregon, rais- ing the state’s death toll to 808. The OHA report- ed 1,225 new confirmed and presumptive cases of COVID-19, bringing the state total to 60,873. New cases are in the fol- lowing counties: Baker (4), Benton (16), Clackamas (121), Clatsop (2), Colum- bia (14), Coos (8), Crook (6), Curry (6), Deschutes (31), Douglas (21), Grant (3), Harney (5), Hood Riv- er (8), Jackson (89), Jeffer- son (10), Josephine (13), Klamath (20), Lake (5), Lane (130), Lincoln (1), Linn (11), Malheur (21), Marion (84), Morrow (1), Multnomah (376), Polk (20), Umatilla (20), Union (8), Wasco (8), Washington (127), and Yamhill (36). puter, then obtain financial information via that means.
