Florence Police warn area residents of recent email, phone scam efforts
Multiple Florence resi-
dents have reported being
contacted by individuals
via telephone or email ad-
vising them they have been
defrauded, and they need to
repay the financial institu-
tion.
These payments are facil-
itated by the victim buying
prepaid credit or gift cards
and providing redemption
information to the sus-
pect(s) over the phone or
via email. Similar incidents
have been reported in the
past in Lane County.
Citizens are reminded
that this is not legitimate
activity and financial insti-
tutions do not utilize this
method to collect official
payments.
Citizens are encouraged
to hang up the phone if they
suspect a scam, and report
scams to your local law en-
forcement agency.
Calls asking for payment
through untraceable meth-
ods such as prepaid cards,
gift cards, or other cash
cards, are probably a scam.
Calls that use scare tac-
tics, timelines, or pressure
you to send money quickly,
are also likely scams.
There have also been
two other recent reports of
scams:
• One where the sus-
pect(s) will offer to “fix”
an issue if you give them
remote access to your com-
