SIUSLAW NEWS | WEDNESDAY, JULY 8, 2020 | 9A Latest OHA modeling suggests marked rise in COVID-19 spread Oregon Health Plan online system receives upgrade New modeling of the suggests the previous 27. “Think hard about your COVID-19 virus shows that COVID-19 is spread- ing more rapidly in Ore- gon, according to the latest model released today by the Oregon Health Au- thority and the Institute for Disease Modeling. The model, which is based on data through June 18, offers three projections — optimistic, moderate and pessimistic — predict- ing that daily case levels could rise as much as 20 percentage points. The modeling assumes that hospitalizations from COVID-19 remain stable and testing remains at its present level of approxi- mately 4,000 a day: The optimistic scenario with those assumptions modeling increase of June 11 was the result of high- er testing and that case counts would remain sta- ble at about 180 per day over the next month. This is the least likely scenario to occur because it assumes diagnosis of all new cases and presently about one-third of new in- fections cannot be traced to a known source. The moderate scenario suggests the rise in cases in the last modeling re- port was due to increased transmission and expand- ed testing — and that daily infections of COVID-19 could rise over the next month to more than 900 per day, with daily hospi- talizations rising from 8 to The most pessimistic scenario suggests the rise in cases in the last model- ing report was due entirely to increased transmission and not expanded test- ing — and that infections could rise to more than 4,800, and hospitalizations could increase to 82 per day. “We know that COVID-19 is in our com- munities,” said Dean Sidelinger, MD, Oregon state health officer. “This latest model provides us with a sobering reminder that we all need to guard against continued spread, especially as we continue to reopen and the weather gets warmer.” Dr. Sidelinger said, choice of activities, espe- cially as we get close to the Fourth of July holiday. Ask yourself: how can I reduce my risk and the risk I might pose to people around me?” He urges people to do what they can to suppress the virus by staying 6 feet away from other people, wearing a mask, avoiding large gatherings and, if you are in a group setting — like a holiday barbeque — stay outside, keep your distance and use a face covering when you’re not eating. Lastly, wash your hands frequently and stay home if you’re sick. The upgrade is the first milestone in a larg- er project to make it easier for Oregonians to apply for health and hu- man services benefits. The online applica- tion was unavailable from July 2-5 while the upgrade was in progress. Online applications that were not submitted by 4 p.m. on July 2 were not able to be trans- ferred to the new system during the upgrade and will have to be restarted. For Oregonians apply- ing for Oregon Health Plan benefits online, ap- plications casn now be completed on the new system. Paper applica- tions and applications completed over the phone are not impacted. Oregonians can con- tact customer service at 1-800-699-9075 (TTY 711) to apply over the phone or request that an application be mailed to them. They can also down- load, print and mail a paper application. Both options are available in multiple languages. The Oregon ONE system will continue to be upgraded, in phases, through February 2021. Once the system is fully updated, all Oregonians will be able to use a sin- gle online application to apply for cash, childcare, food and medical bene- fits. They will also have the option to apply for any of these programs over the phone or in person at any local Aging and People with Disabilities, Area Agency on Aging or Self-Sufficiency Pro- grams office that pro- vides those benefits. “This upgrade is just the first step in improv- ing the way the state de- livers health and human services benefits to Ore- gonians and their fami- lies,” said DHS Director Fariborz Pakseresht. Visit the DHS Bene- fits and Assistance page to learn more about the programs available to qualifying Oregonians. Let me Showcase your property.
