Friends of Florence Cancer Vans again transporting patients The Friends of Florence buses, which have long pro- vided free rides for coastal cancer patients to the Eu- gene-Springfield area for radiation treatments, start- ed rolling again on July 6. The pandemic caused the Friends of Florence to cease operations for the first time in its 35-year history. Under a plan devised by Friends of Florence opera- tions chief Bart Mealer, the five-day-a-week bus trips will differ markedly from those in the past. For starters, the 15-pas- senger buses will carry no more than four passengers in addition to the driver. The seating arrangement will be laid out so every- one on the bus is at least six feet apart. Each person including the driver will be required to wear a face cov- ering. Other measures include: • Taking forehead tem- peratures with an infrared thermometer of everyone boarding the bus, including the driver. Anyone with a temperature over 100 de- grees will not be allowed to ride. • Allowing no eating or drinking aboard the bus. • Providing hand sani- tizer and disposable face masks for all riders. • Opening side windows to provide air circulation during the trip. • Cleaning and sanitizing the bus at the end of every trip. In the past, the bus has taken patients for radia- tion treatment to both the Willamette Valley Cancer Institute in Eugene and the Oregon Urology Institute in Springfield. For the fore- seeable future the bus will go only to the Cancer Insti- tute in Eugene, which will coordinate with the Friends of Florence to schedule the Greater Florence Area B usiness Quarterly riders. The nonprofit Friends of Florence group, which owns two buses and oper- ates entirely on donations and grants, is in the process of purchasing a consider- able amount of new equip- ment to allow operations to resume, Mealer said. That equipment ranges from masks and sanitizing wipes to an $850 hand-held electrostatic sprayer to dis- infect the seats. Money from the Florence Van Fans, a separate orga- nization dedicated to rais- ing funds for the Friends of Florence operations, will help with the extra expens- es, Grove said. For more information about riding the bus, volun- teering to drive or making donations, contact Grove at 541-997-8629 or Mealer at 541-997-8663, or go to the organization website at friendsofflorence.net.
