Taking it to the streets for seniors Kiwanis recognizes Mapleton and Siuslaw graduates with street signs Tide Tables B Y C HANTELLE M EYER Entrance Siuslaw River Th e Class of 2020 can now drive past 110 signs bear- ing their names and those of their classmates. Kiwanis Club of Florence provided these street signs for the seniors at Mapleton and Siuslaw high schools. “We’re recognizing every- one who started the school year with the intention of graduating,” said Kiwanis President Bob Sneddon. Each student has a sign, along with seven addition- al blank signs honoring the whole class. In Florence, signs went up on May 31 to line Highway 101 between Eighth Street and the Siuslaw River Bridge. Th e Mapleton signs were delivered to the school dis- trict for installation this week. Th e suggestion for the signs came from Siuslaw Key Club advisor Jan McKnight. “We had to do something for these kids,” she said, not- ing that so many activities normally associated with be- ing a graduating senior have been taken away because of COVID-19 precautions. “Putting the signs up for the entire week gives the commu- nity a chance to recognize all of the seniors,” Sneddon said. Starting on Friday, grad- uation day for both schools, students will be able to pick up their signs. Kiwanis will coordinate delivering any re- maining signs aft er that.
