2A | SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 2020 | SIUSLAW NEWS On The Record OBITUARIES DUNNING—Mr. Ray- mond Earl Dunning died on Jan. 18, 2020, at his home in Florence, Ore. He was predeceased by his wife, Effie. Ray, a 30-year resident of Florence, was born in Gold Beach, Ore., on Dec. 11, 1927. He graduated in 1945 from R o s e - burg Se- nior High School in Roseburg, Ore. A f - ter high school, he Raymond served in Dunning the Unit- ed States Army and Army Reserves until 1957. In July 1954, he married Mrs. Ef- fie Dickens, a widow from Sutherlin, Ore. Raymond worked as a groceryman from the age 15 until he retired in 1990. In his retirement years, he worked as a Mobile Mis- sionary throughout the Western United States and for 20 years as a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity. He is survived by his sister, Mrs. Doris Garrett of Florence; his children: Gilbert Dunning of Flor- ence, Douglas Dickens of Oklahoma, Claudia Mat- tingly of Minnesota and Alice Ledee of Washington; 13 grandchildren and 55 great-grandchildren. A memorial service for Ray is scheduled for Satur- day, Feb. 8 beginning at 1 p.m., at the Church of the Nazarene, 1536 12th St. in Florence. In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation be made to the Habitat for Humanity in Florence. XAVIER—Joseph F. Xavier, Jr., born June 26, 1931, in Puâ unÄ nÄ, Maui, Hawaii, passed away in the early morning hours on Jan. 13, 2020, in Port- land, Ore. Joe was born and raised on the island of Maui and graduated from St. Antho- ny High School in 1950. He was 10 years old when the Japanese att a c ke d P e a r l Harbor and he of- ten spoke about the Joseph Xavier effects that day had on his family, friends and beloved Ha- waii. As a young man, Joe moved to the mainland and attended Woodbury Uni- versity in Burbank, Calif., graduating with a degree in Business Administration. He met the love of his life, Nola Carter, at UCLA and liked to brag about how he had been married three times (to the same woman). On their 50th wedding anniversary, at Joe’s insis- tence, they renewed their Identity released of deceased Florence woman On Jan. 26, at approxi- mately 9:50 a.m., the Lane County Sheriff ’s Office received a report of a de- ceased female at Terwillig- er Hot Springs off Forest Service Road 19 in eastern Lane County. Investigation indicates that 25-year-old Kaylee Marie Price of Florence had been at the hot springs with two friends when she expe- rienced a medical event. Lifesaving efforts were initiated by bystanders and taken over by Upper McK- enzie Rural Fire Protection District personnel before Price was pronounced de- ceased. As of Friday, the Lane County Medical Examin- er’s Office had not released the cause or manner of death, but foul play was not suspected. TSA to begin requiring new ID to board aircraft Something big is hap- pening Oct. 1 of this year. If you aren’t paying atten- tion, it might mean miss- ing your flight out of PDX or any other airport across the U.S. On that date, the Trans- portation Security Admin- istration, or TSA, begins requiring a new type of identification to board a commercial aircraft. The new ID must be compliant with something called the Real ID Act. It’s designed to keep people safer in the air, but if someone tries to board an aircraft using their current Oregon driver license starting in October, it won’t work. That’s be- cause the current Oregon driver license is not Real ID compliant. Oregon DMV will begin offering a Real ID option on July 6, 2020. To fulfill the demand of nearly 1 million Oregonians who will want the Real ID op- tion, DMV would have to issue 32 licenses a second every business day from July to October. That’s just not possible. If someone doesn’t have a Real ID compliant form of ID at the airport, TSA will put them through an alternate identity verifica- tion process that could take an hour or more, and peo- ple may miss their flight. There is an answer for Oregonians: obtain and use a passport or passport card. The cost of getting a new passport card is roughly equal to that of getting a re- placement license with the Real ID option — and peo- ple can apply now at one of over 76 acceptance sites across Oregon. Joe spent most of his ca- reer working in the univer- sity system. First at UCLA, then UCSB, and finally at the University of Washing- ton (Go Dawgs!). During his career, Joe had the op- portunity to meet many dignitaries and celebrities including the Grateful Dead, President Ronald Reagan, HRH Queen Eliz- abeth and Kareem Ab- dul-Jabbar. Joe loved to talk and share stories. After he retired from the UW, he and his wife moved to Florence, Ore., where Joe spent much of his time volunteering in the community with the Elks, Make a Difference Day and Neighborhood Watch.
