SIUSLAW NEWS | WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 29, 2020 | 3A Community News Family Bingo Night Scheduled for Feb. 15 Siuslaw eighth-grade parents are hosting a Fam- ily BINGO Night themed “I <3 BINGO” on Valen- tine’s weekend, S a t u r d a y, Feb. 15, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Cross Road As- sembly of God Church, 1380 10th St. All ages are wel- come and families are en- couraged to attend. Cost is $5 for students and $10 for adults (cash only) and in- clude two hours of bingo. There will be multi- ple cards for each game, snacks and fun. There will be great pric- es for the winners of each game. There will also be a Valen- tine des- sert ticket auction and tickets can be pur- chased for $1 each or 6 for $5. I f you happened to drive by Roby’s Furniture and Appliance on Jan. 22, you may have noticed the store was closed. That’s because the entire Roby’s team was at work giving one of the faculty loung- es at Siuslaw Elementary School a makeover. What had been a cramped and cluttered space was cleared out, decluttered and given a fresh and bright coat of paint. Then new furni- ture: an expandable din- ing table with six new chairs; a loveseat and easy chair, and two new end tables were brought in to leave a cozier and much more comfortable space. Each year on one day in January, all seven Roby’s locations close and the staff fans out in their own communities to work on a service project. “We call it Serve Day,” said Florence store man- ager Bob Sneddon. The concept began when the company’s third generation owner- ship team was attending college at George Fox 25 years ago. The school en- couraged every student to spend at least one day a year in service to others. This year’s project made the list after then- fourth-grader Zoey Utz wrote a letter to Sneddon asking him to consider the makeover. Utz wrote about the condition of the room and how it was cramped and could not accommo- date any more than just a few of the staff members who were on lunch break at any given time. “That letter came right after we had done our 2019 project at the Flor- ence Events Center,” said Sneddon “I kept her letter on my desk for months and decided that we would try to meet her re- quest.” Roby’s Furniture & Appliance/The Mattress Shoppe is a family owned and operated retailer with seven locations. The company began in 1950 in Tillamook. The Florence store, formerly Western Lane Furniture, began that same year. Maybe it is a color? A style?” asks Jo Beaudreau, owner of BeauxArts. People are invited to create their own one-of-a- kind art pin on Friday, Jan. 31, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at BeauxArts Fine Art Ma- terials, 2285 Highway 101, Suite H. Attendees will be able to choose from simple to dy- namic designs. People can create a pin with watercol- or, pen, marker, pencils or more that they can wear with any outfit or for spe- cial occasions. All ages and creative abilities are welcomed and encouraged to make a pin. There is a limited quan- tity available, and the event runs while supplies last. No purchase necessary for one art pin. Each addition- al pin will be a small fee.
