SIUSLAW NEWS | WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 30, 2019 | 3A Community News City Lights to feature film on ‘Fantastic Fungi’ City Lights Cinemas will present the new documen- tary film “Fantastic Fungi,” which is dedicated to the vast world of mushrooms. This film is of interest to experienced coastal mush- room aficionados as well as novices. “Fantastic Fungi” is an important scientif- ic exploration and visual journey through the ex- otic, little-known realm of fungi, directed by Louie Schwartzberg, an award-winning master of nature imagery, special-ef- fects cinematography and storytelling that is both informative and inspiring. Discover fungi’s enor- mity, such as the largest organism on the planet is a 2,200+ acre mycelium fun- gal mat more than 2,000 years old. Experience their beauty thanks to camer- as that capture jewel-like mushrooms in countless shapes and in brilliant col- ors, from pink and yellow to turquoise. The film also highlights fungi’s potential by taking viewers on a journey that reveals mycelium as the key to the regeneration of our living planet. “Fantastic Fungi” starts this Friday, Nov. 1, and plays all week at City Lights Cinemas. A lek Skarlatos, former Army National Guardsman, is best known as one of three American men who stopped a terror attack on a Paris-bound train in 2015. Hailed as a hero, he was awarded the U.S. Army Soldier’s Medal by President Obama and received France’s Le- gion of Honor from French Presi- dent Hollande. He went on to play himself in the Clint Eastwood film, “The 15:17 to Paris.” Skarlatos, who is running as the Republican candidate for U.S. Con- gressional District 4, which includes Florence and Lane County, visited Florence last week to listen to the needs of citizens in rural Oregon. His first stop included speaking with several small business owners about the needs of the small busi- ness community. He then arrived at Veteran’s Memorial Park, where he learned the history of the park and talked with local veterans. “Being a vet himself, Alek really understands our needs,” said Flor- ence resident Tony Cavarno, vice- chair of the local veterans group Florence Band of Brothers. Skarlatos’ next stop while in Florence was a tour of the Port of Siuslaw with Port Manager David Huntington, who shared the port’s recent upgrades and improvements. “I’m running to represent the log- gers, the veterans, the moms, dads and families trying to make ends meet,” Skarlatos said during a brief stop at R&R King Logging, Inc., where he added that protecting the environment is important, but that we must manage our forests, “or the wildfires will do it for us.” Peace Harbor urges vaccinations to protect against influenza With flu season now of- ficially underway, Peace- Health physicians are urg- ing residents to receive an influenza vaccination, as well as follow a few sim- ple steps to help prevent spreading the flu. Pe aceHe alt h Medical Group at Peace Harbor has plenty of vaccine on hand and will hold the second of two drop-in flu clinics this Thursday, Oct. 31, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Pri- mary Care Clinic, Building 380. Patients are welcome to just drop by or call 541- 997-7134 to schedule an appointment for Thursday or any other day that’s con- venient. Vaccinations are also available at most local pharmacies. “First and foremost, get- ting the influenza vaccina- tion is the best way to avoid or decrease symptoms of influenza,” said Margie Tes- sin-Mason, RN, a Peace- Health Oregon infection preventionist. “You should always cover your cough — ideally with your inner elbow — and practice good handwashing. “Social distancing is also important. If you are sick, stay home; if you must be around others, consider wearing a mask.” WEDNESDAY THURSDAY This year’s seasonal flu vaccine is quadrivalent, which means it’s designed to protect against four dif- ferent flu viruses: two in- fluenza A viruses and two influenza B viruses. The viruses in the shot are inactive, so don’t wor- ry — you can’t catch the flu from the vaccine. The vaccine is also preserva- tive-free. PeaceHealth joins with the U.S. Centers for Dis- ease Control, recommend- ing that everyone ages 6 months and older get a yearly flu vaccination. It takes about two weeks for the flu shot to start work- ing. According to the CDC, flu activity peaks in the U.S. in January or Febru- ary. However, seasonal flu activity can occur as late as May, so getting vaccinated is one way to ensure that your family is protected for the duration of this flu sea- son. “When a large group of individuals develops immu- nity after being vaccinated, others who cannot receive those same vaccinations due to illness, age or previ- ous severe reactions will be better protected,” explained Tessin-Mason. “As with any medication, get all the facts about a vaccine and make informed decisions.” For more information about why it’s important to protect yourself against the flu, visit www.peacehealth. org/healthy-you/flu-shot- faq.
