Website and E-Edition: TheSiuslawNews.com Letters to the Editor policy LETTERS Wisen up and unite against the 1 percent The imbalance on this so called “Supreme Court” is outrageous- ly unfair to all citizens. The “tea party” tilt on the court, with its refusal to over- turn “Citizen’s United” and omit the exploitable terms “Corpora- tions are Entities” and “Money is Speech...” gives us not a prom- ise of democracy but rather a plutocracy in which a very few ridiculously wealthy 1 percent will rule the land — eventually seizing everything that gets in its way and leaving nothing for the 99 percent of Americans. Together, united, we the peo- ple must adhere to our Con- stitution and fight to make de- mocracy legal again. Please take time to google “Move to Amend” and study the history of the “Citizens United” case. A great litmus test for select- ing a deserving candidate in up- coming elections is: Have they signed the petition? The peo- ple’s amendment is in motion and has been for many, many years. Get active in the movement to save democracy. We must all wise up, unite and proceed with this task that our forefathers would have us com- plete. Ever so sincerely, —Wende Jarman Florence The problem is more than senators’ salaries In response to Mr. Cavarno’s Letter to the Editor (“Compare Trump’s Travel Expenses to Democrats’,” Oct. 5), I cited the source for the numbers I refer- enced in my letter: The Huffing- ton Post. There are numerous oth- er reputable sources that cor- roborate the stats provided by The Huffington Post, including Forbes, Newsweek, multiple oth- er news agencies, and the GAO. Anyone who can add two and two and get four should have the sense to see that any analy- sis of the salaries of the senators campaigning for president or the president’s salary is insignif- icant. The senators running for president use campaign funds to pay for campaign-related travel; meanwhile, President Trump is using taxpayer dollars to visit his golf courses and hob- nob with his rich friends. If you think the opposition to Donald Trump is about his salary, you’ve missed the point completely. We’re worried about climate change, dirty air and water, children in cages, the bul- lying of our allies, obstruction of justice, abuse of power, sand- bagging Congress, enlisting for- eign governments to further the president’s reelection and the over 12,000 lies told by him in the 988 days since he took of- fice — to name just a few of the issues. These are all bigger problems than the salaries of senators running for president.
