Visitors can choose from any of the activities below to experience these special places in new ways: • July 6 and Aug. 3 — Trees to Sea: 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Visitor Center Learn about the inter- connectedness of the for- est and ocean ecosystems through a variety of hands on stations, presentations and hikes. • July 22-23 and July Smokey’s 75 years of pre- venting wildfires. Enjoy birthday cake, learn about fire ecology on the Siuslaw, and tell happy birthday to Smokey him- self. • Mondays through Sept. 2 — Walk with a Ranger: Noon; meet at the Visitor Center Join, retired Chief Park Ranger, Michael Noack, for an easy to moderate hike where he will be sharing information about the local flora and fauna. Hikes will last 75-90 minutes. • Wednesdays through Aug. 28 — Under the Sea: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; meet at the Visitor Center 29-30 — Marbled Murrelet Survey: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Visitor Center. Contribute to research aimed at saving this threatened seabird. Join scientists and land man- agers to learn about mur- relet nesting and feeding habits, then help identify and count birds as they fly between the forest and ocean. At 3 p.m., Tara will lead a stroll on the Captain Cook’s Trail to explore the rocky shoreline and marine reserve. • Thursdays, July 4-Aug. 28 — Lunch with Dr. Jim Nechols: Noon; at the Visitor Center Dr. Jim Nechols, retired professor of Entomology from Kansas State University, will present “Alien Invaders: Invasive Plants of Siuslaw National Forest” and “Self Defense 101 for Insects: Insect Defense Mechanisms” • Saturdays, July 6-Aug. 31 — Ranger F.E.D Talks: Noon; at the Visitor Center Join Siuslaw National Forest Field Rangers for a fun and informative “Forest, Explore, Discover” Siuslaw National Forest presenta- tion • T u e s d a y s , Wednesdays, Thursdays, July 2-Sept. 5 — Walk with a Ranger: Noon; meet at the Visitor Center Explore a variety of natural history topics on The Giant Spruce Trail, Discovery Loop, or Captain Cook Trail on a guided hike lead by Siuslaw National Forest Field Rangers. These events are free, but a Northwest Forest Pass, Oregon Coast Passport, federal recre- ation pass, or $5 day-use fee is required within the Cape Perpetua Scenic Area and at some trail- heads and day use sites. LCSO’s ‘Operation Dry Water’ continues through tomorrow Lane County Sheriff ’s Office (LCSO) Marine Patrol deputies, in part- nership with the National Association of State B o a t i n g L a w Administrators and the U.S. Coast Guard, are participating in the “Operation Dry Water” heightened awareness and enforcement week- end, which began yester- day and continues through Sunday, July 7. Operation Dry Water is a boating under the influence awareness and enforcement campaign with the mission of reducing the number of alcohol and drug related crashes and fatalities through increased recre- ational boater awareness and by fostering a stron- ger and more visible deterrent to alcohol and drug use on the water. The LCSO is working to increase boater aware- ness of the dangers and risks associated with boating under the influ- ence and will be on the lookout for impaired boaters. The priority during this holiday weekend is to provide boaters with a safe and enjoyable expe- rience by removing dan- gerous and impaired boaters from the water- ways. Operating a vessel under the influence of alcohol or drugs is illegal on all bodies of water and can lead to serious inju- ries and consequences. In Oregon, the same laws that apply to motor- ists and intoxicants apply to boaters on the water. The Lane County Sheriff ’s Office reminds boaters to always boat sober and wear a life jacket when on the water.
