SIUSLAW NEWS | SATURDAY, MARCH 23, 2019 | 3A Community News Port Hole authors named International Book Awards Finalists Two authors published by Port Hole Publishing in Flor- ence have placed as finalists in the 2018 Interna- tional Book Awards competition. Ned Hickson, author of “Pearls of Writing Wisdom: From 16 Shucking Years as a Columnist,” and Reverend David B. Fenwick, author of “Jesus – His Story: The Integrated Life of Christ,” placed in their categories. Hickson, who has published two books with Port Hole, is an award winning columnist with a blog follow- ing of thousands, and is the editor of the Siuslaw News. Fenwick, of Los Angeles, Calif., served for 45 years as a pastor and teacher, found- ed a Christian school in East L.A., and served the General Missionary Board of the Free Methodist Church of North America as Mission Superin- tendent over Latino churches. He is now retired. The International Book Awards (IBA), in its 10th year, provides a venue for writers to compete with talent- ed authors through- out the world. IBA enlists expert judges in numerous genres to select finalists and winners, as a promotional vehicle for authors and pub- lishers. Heceta Head Lightstation celebrates 125 years of lighting up the Oregon coast PHOTO BY DIGITAL DUNES PHOTOGRAPHY H eceta Head Lightstation will be celebrating its 125-year anniver- sary on Saturday, March 30, from 4 to 7 p.m. The iconic 56-foot Heceta Head Lighthouse is known as the most pho- tographed lighthouse in America. The community is invited to cele- brate at the light station, which has a scenic walking trail that leads up to The Keeper’s House, Gift Shop and lighthouse. This family-friendly free event will mainly take place at the Heceta Lighthouse Bed & Breakfast. The U.S. Coast Guard will kick off the event at 4:30 p.m. with an opening cer- emony. Hot dogs, refreshments and birth- day cupcakes will be provided, as well as live music and lawn games (weather permitting). Local agency representa- tives will be present to talk to about the outstanding natural features of the area as well as docents from the Heceta Lighthouse Interpretive Center at the Keeper’s House and Oregon State Park docents at the lighthouse. Plus, the local Siuslaw Pioneer Mu- seum’s Heritage Players will transport you back in time and will be dressed up in period wear. The lightstation’s first order Fresnel lens has been the brightest light shin- ing upon the Oregon Coastline reach- ing out some twenty-one miles for well over a century. It has warned sea-far- ing mariners of the shallow reef along- side the massive headland and served as a U.S. Coast Guard station, protect- ing the region during World War ll. The Heceta Head Lighthouse and Light Keeper’s home are circa 1894 and both are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Heceta Lighthouse Bed & Breakfast operates in the historic keep- er’s house, which has been a home to dozens of dedicated lightkeepers and their families and is one of the only re- maining beautifully preserved Queen Ann-style lightkeeper’s homes in the nation. The first floor also serves as an interpretive center. The park is located off Highway 101 just 13 miles north of Florence. Park- ing is available at the Heceta Head Lighthouse State Scenic View Point, with parking for $5 per vehicle. Ongoing complimentary shuttle service is provided to and from the state park parking lot to the celebra- tion site for those who don’t wish to take the trail.
