Spruce Point, the primary host, is seeking funds and volunteers. ‘Wall That Heals’ veteran memorial coming to Florence Spruce Point Assisted Liv- ing in Florence, Ore., is the primary host organization bringing “The Wall That Heals” to Florence in April for the wall’s only appearance in the state of Oregon for this year. A program of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, founders of the original Wall, this traveling display is a three-quarter scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Me- morial in Washington, D.C. In addition to the roughly 360-foot Wall, a Mobile Ed- ucation Center also displays the legacy of the Wall, and educates about the impact of the Vietnam War. Spruce Point Director of Community Relations Kim Pruitt, the contact for inqui- ries for this visit stated, “The fund received over 100 ap- plications to host the wall in 2019 so we are very excited to be the only host site selected for Oregon.” Pruitt’s father is a Vietnam veteran and it was critically important for her and Spruce Point to host this display. The wall will be open to the public for display 24 hours each day beginning Thurs- day, April 4, until mid-after- noon on Sunday, April 7, on the grounds of Siuslaw Mid- dle School. Its arrival in Florence will take place mid-afternoon on Tuesday, April 2. It will arrive via Highway 101 from the south, with an escort includ- ing multiple veteran motor- cycle groups and emergency vehicles. A remembrance ceremo- ny will take place on April 6 in the early afternoon, with participation from all of the veteran service organizations in Florence. “We still have a little way to go on the funding needs,” Pruitt said. “Individuals, businesses and organizations can still contact myself to do so, or make direct contribu- tions through Banner Bank in Florence. “We are also still in need of volunteers for the man-pow- er needs for set up, knock down and security during its stay here.” Pruitt can be contacted via phone at 541-997-6111 or via email at kim.prutt@avalon- seniorliving.com. New Don-Lee Davidson Memorial Scholarship being offered Don-Lee Davidson was a longtime resident and busi- ness owner in the Mapleton and Florence areas. He grad- uated as salutatorian from Mapleton High School in 1949, graduated from Ore- gon State University in 1954, and served three years in the U.S. Army before joining his dad in the management of Davidson Industries; he be- came president and general manager in 1960. In his memory, his family has established two $2,000 scholarships for this year’s Mapleton or Siuslaw High School graduates who will enroll in a trade school or a voca-tional program after graduation. Davidson dedicated him- self to the business, industry and people of the Siuslaw re- gion. Hundreds of local high school and college students found education-sustaining summer employment at Da- vidson Industries. Countless area residents, as many as 450 at a time, had careers at the mill or in the woods working for Davidson Industries. Davidson will always be remembered for “his fierce loyalty to his employees and the community … an ev- er-present spirit of generosi- ty, and a man of his word.” Eligible applicants must submit a completed set of required items, postmarked no later than April 15 of this school year. Plastic Round-Up seeks to recycle clean, dry plastics The Spring Plastic Round- up is in full swing. People are asked to bring their clean and dry plastics with labels removed (except for the heat sealed labels). This recycling event is in- tended to collect some of the plastic containers that have recently been dropped from curbside recycling service in Lane County. This time, the round-up can also take pill bottles, clearly marked lids and bev- erage handles. The following collectors will be able to help area res- idents. Bottles, jugs, tubs, lids and beer han- dles of any color are accept- able. Volunteers will be inspect- ing them for cleanliness, being dry and the accepted shapes. Just because a lid came with a #5 tub, does not necessarily mean it will be the same recycling number. Any lid without its own stamped number will not be accepted. People are encouraged to separately bag or box their 2, 4 and 5 plastics to speed up processing.
