DUII High Visibility Enforcement results released
The Florene Police Depart-
ment participated in extra
DUII Enforcement during
the Super Bowl Sunday on
Feb. 3.
During this event, the
Florence Police Department
arrested one driver for driv-
ing while impaired, issued
eight warnings for miscella-
neous traffic offenses, and is-
sued two citations for driving
while suspended.
Throughout the month of
February, the Florence Po-
lice Department arrested a
total of six drivers for driving
while impaired.
Law Enforcement agencies
throughout Oregon and the
rest of the United States par-
ticipate in nationwide efforts
to get impaired drivers off
the street.

Parking relief coming to downtown Eugene
The Lane County Board of
County Commissioners has
approved a contract to bring
temporary parking relief to
downtown Eugene for both
visitors and businesses.
The temporary parking
will be located on the Coun-
ty’s newly acquired vacant
lot east of the Public Service
Building in downtown Eu-
gene.
The contract is for a tem-
porary parking surface
called Rollpark, which will
be installed by local contrac-
tors and Rollpark techni-
cians in 8–10 weeks.
There will be 285 spaces,
including seven Americans
with Disabilities Act (ADA)
compliant spaces.
Spaces will be a mixture of
permitted spaces for down-
town employees, as well as
hourly spaces for visitors.
“As construction and in-
vestment in downtown Eu-
gene continues to increase,
there has been a corre-
sponding decrease in down-
town parking,” said Lane
County Administrator Steve
Mokro-hisky. “Our commu-
nity’s reinvestment in down-
town is exciting and we rec-
ognize the need it creates for
both temporary and long-
term solutions to parking.
“We know there are down-
town Eugene businesses
that have already left — or
are considering leaving —
downtown due to a lack of

available parking. While the
Rollpark is temporary, it will
help relieve immediate pres-
sure and give us time to de-
velop innovative long-term
solutions.”
The Rollpark is designed
to last for 3–5 years and can
be rolled up and re-deployed
to other locations during its
lifespan — making it a good
choice for this location since
construction may begin on
the lot within the next two
years.
Lane County expects that
the cost of installation will
be recovered through per-
mitted and hourly parking
fees over the next two years.

Simple dos and don’ts when stopped by police
When you are signaled
to pull over by a police offi-
cer, you need to understand
this can be a very danger-
ous time. Do not assume
the officer knows you are a
law-abiding citizen; officers
must be cautious at all times.
Follow these recommen-
dations:
• Pull over as far to the
right as safely possible.
• Turn on the interior light
if the stop occurs at night.
• Place your hands on the
steering wheel until the offi-
cer can make a safety evalua-
tion of you, your passengers
and your car.
• Avoid making any sud-
den or reaching movements.
• Remain in your vehicle
unless advised by the officer
to exit your car.
• If you are carrying a
weapon, inform the officer
about the weapon and its lo-
cation without reaching for it
or handling it.
• Always follow the offi-
cer’s instructions.
Stopping at night, espe-
cially along a dark stretch
of road, can heighten the
tension for you and the of-
ficer. Officers do not object
to a driver proceeding to the
nearest well-lit area. Simply
acknowledge the officer by
turning on your flashers and
driving at a reduced speed.
If you are concerned the
person stopping you may be
impersonating a police offi-
cer, contact the non-emer-
gency dispatch line or call
911. Ask the officer for the
name of his agency and tell
them you are calling the po-
lice. A real officer will not
object to you verifying his
or her identity and the stop
location.
If you are asked to exit
your car, walk to the rear of
your vehicle to the side away
from traffic, or as directed by
the officer. Use the vehicle as
a barrier between you and
oncoming cars.
Once the traffic stop is
finished, walk carefully back
to your vehicle keeping an
eye out for traffic. When an
opportunity exists, carefully
merge back into the flow of
traffic.
Being stopped by a po-
lice officer is not always an
unpleasant experience. Re-
member that many times
only a warning or other ben-
eficial safety information is
shared with a driver.
