SIUSLAW NEWS | WEDNESDAY, MARCH 6, 2019 | 3A Community News PTA to hear about Lane Education Service District on March 12 The next general meeting of the Florence Community PTA is scheduled for Tues- day, March 12, at 4:30 p.m. in the commons area of Siuslaw Middle School. Everyone is invited to attend. The guest speaker will be Sherrie Bandy from Lane Ed- ucation Service District (Lane ESD), who is also the coor- dinator of the Lane County Driver Education Initiative, a program supported by Ore- gon Department of Transpor- tation (ODOT). In Or- egon, Lane County has had the highest rate of fatal traf- fic crashes for the past three years,” Bandy said. Her presentation at the PTA meeting will introduce the program, called “Teens Driv- ing Safely – Lane County,” and explain how it will benefit the Florence community. T he sun came out for the 22nd annual Florence Home & Garden Show on March 1 through 3 at Florence Events Center. Filled with gourmet tastings, unique home goods, garden products and more, the show annually brings in thousands of people to view the latest in home and garden inspiration, trends and innovated products. This year was the largest to date, with the most vendors offering the most variety of any home show yet. Fuentes will be joined by two exceptional Spanish Fla- menco artists — acclaimed Spanish-Romani guitarist Pedro Cortes and singer/per- cussionist/dancer Jose More- no. The all-ages performance will be the 13th stop of a 30- date tour of Washington, Cal- ifornia, Oregon and Nevada. Regina Hackett of The Se- attle P.I. wrote that Fuentes is “Real flamenco, straight up and stunning.” Fuentes, born in Seattle to parents of Puer- to Rican and Irish ancestry, is one of the only touring artists in the Pacific Northwest re- gion with strong links to Flamen- co culture. She studies both baile (flamen- co dance) and cante (flamen- co singing) and has toured throughout many states. She has independently produced over 300 performances and workshops featuring interna- tionally recognized Spanish Flamenco artists. She attri- butes her formation as an artist to her most significant mentor, Maestra Sara de Luis. She continues to evolve as an innovator and perfor- WEDNESDAY THURSDAY COURTESY PHOTO mance artist. Cortes comes from a fami- ly of Spanish Gypsy guitarists and began his studies with his father and the esteemed Flamenco guitarist Sabicas. Having toured professionally since the age of 17, he is gain- ing international recognition as a soloist and composer. He has premiered his work in eminent theaters and has two books on Flamenco, “El Dron del Faraon” and “Cruzando el Charco,” published by the American Institute of Guitar. He has composed music for film and TV and worked with the St. Louis Opera, the New York Grand Opera and more. Cortes is a third generation Flamenco guitarist and uses the experience passed down to him by his family to main- tain the purity of Flamenco while creating new composi- tions. Born into a family of fa- mous flamenco artists, More- no began his flamenco career at an early age, debuting at the famous Tablao Costa Vasca in Miami. He has performed in various companies and worked with distinguished artists. He also has choreo- graphed and performed a collaborative work with his mother Estrella Morena and with renowned flamenco singer Carmen Linares.
