The annual grants fund up to $20,000 in matching funds for pres- ervation projects. The Preserving Oregon Grants fund the preser- vation of historic build- ings listed on the National Register of Historic Plac- es. Work may include non-maintenance pres- ervation like win-dow re- pair, roof work, foundation projects, plumbing, and electrical needs. The program also funds significant work contrib- uting toward identifying, preserving and interpret- ing archaeological sites. After seeing an article in the Siu- slaw News about Meier’s project of organizing Siuslaw Elementary Kindness Club students to clean headstones at Deadwood Ceme- tery, letters of recommendation were requested from Kindness Club founder, Kaylee Graham; cur- rent club leader, Shannon Graham; and Carrie McNeill, Kindness Club Volunteer. Meier’s work in organizing other students for this heartfelt endeavor certainly meets one of DAR’s main goals of historic preservation. Criteria for approval by the Na- tional Society DAR states, “The in- dividual or organization must have contributed to the community in an outstanding manner through voluntary heroic, civic, benevolent service or by organizing or partici- pating in community activities.” heavily altered over the years. The Budget Committee is a standing committee of five members that sits jointly with the WLAD Directors to publicly re- view and revise the an- nual budget. The Budget Committee approves the budget, permanent tax rate and local option levy. The budget then goes to the WLAD Board of Di- rectors to be adopted. Committee members serve three-year terms which expire on Dec. 31. A Budget Committee member is expected to spend up to 20 hours that includes reviewing the budget and meeting one to three times from April through June each year.
