12A | WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 2019 | SIUSLAW NEWS Vintage burlesque show brings WWII-era glamour to Florence Pin-Ups On Tour, billed as “a good time for a great cause,” is a patriotic World War II-style stage revue com- ing to the Florence Events Center, 715 Quince St., on Sunday, March 10. The Friends of the Florence Events Center are bringing the vintage bur- lesque and variety revue from Las Vegas to town for anyone with an ap- petite for the era’s nostalgia, including retired and active military veterans/ active duty personnel and their fam- ilies. From the moment guests enter the event, they will be treated to some- thing special. The nationally-touring troupe’s goal is to recreate the mag- ic of the Hollywood Canteen of the 1940’s as a club offering dancing, re- freshments and entertainment for ser- vice members on their way overseas. The afternoon matinee promises dancing showgirls, comedy, variety acts, soulful lounge singers, vintage candy girls and more than a few sur- prises. Performers include Los Ange- les- and Las Vegas-based comedians, singers and dancers. In-uniform color guard and ushers will be provided by local veterans’ organizations. With entertainment and atmosphere around every turn, attendees will feel like they stepped into another era. Vin- tage attire for the audience is encour- aged. “This is the G-rated family show version. You would feel comfortable bringing your mother to this show,” says Friends of the Florence Events Center President Kirk Mlinek. Grants available for historic properties, archeology The State Historic Preservation Office is of- fering grants for work on historic properties and for archaeology projects. The annual grants fund up to $20,000 in match- ing funds for preserva- tion projects. The Preserving Or- egon Grants fund the preservation of histor- ic buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Work may include non-main- tenance preservation like win-dow repair, roof work, foundation projects, plumbing, and electrical needs. The program also funds significant work contributing toward identifying, preserving and interpreting archae- ological sites. The Diamonds in the Rough Grants help re- store or reconstruct the facades of buildings that have been heavily al- tered over the years. These grants return buildings to their histor- ic appearance and po- tentially qualify them for historic register designa- tion (local or national). The online grant ap- plication is simple to use and includes plenty of support. Free grant workshops on project planning, grant writing and using the online grant application will be available. A workshop will be held in Salem on Tues- day, March 19, and a webinar workshop will be available on Friday, March 15. Recorded trainings and tips are also online.
