Once again, I go to my movie of choice “Remem- ber the Titans” for an ex- ample about Paralympics. In it, Gerry Bertier (spoiler alert!) becomes a paraple- gic following a car accident and did indeed compete in the Paralympics, winning a medal in the wheelchair shot put. Siuslaw High School had its own globetrotting wheel- Olympic counterparts, a Paralympic athlete or team must meet qualifying stan- dards in order to compete in their Olympics. When I read about Multiple Sclerosis as a qualifi er for the Paralympics, I knew the qualifying standards would chair athlete. Melissa Brandt played on the Siuslaw JV basketball team I coached. She was a hard worker and helped make her teammates bet- ter. In the fall of her senior year, she had a car accident and was paralyzed from the waist down. But she was far from be- ing mentally paralyzed When she returned to school, I became her trans- porter; I carried her upstairs for her rehab work on the FIRST WEIGH-IN JAN. 30TH (MANDATORY!) In addition, she attended every basketball practice to support her teammates. It became our practice to roll Melissa to the basket- ball court aft er every game, home or away. She would have a basketball with her and would shoot until she made it. Th e team would not leave the court until Melissa made Sailors from 1B effort by the Sailors, the Mustangs went on an 11-2 run to end the quarter and took a commanding 20-47 lead to start the fourth peri- od, which included scoring from junior Nate Neece (3 Fishing from 1B Thursday. From this small step little did I realize how motivated Melissa was. A few years later, when she was in town, I invited her to share her experiences with my health classes. The Sailors will return to their home hardwood Tuesday, when they host league rival McKenzie. Lake Creek is low and clear and will bene- fit from the forecasted rains later in the week, expect fish to be on the move after the next storm. Hatchery fish in the Siuslaw system return to Whitaker Creek (Siuslaw) and Green Creek (Lake Creek). Bobber fishing with bait/jigs, drift fishing, and casting lures are good tech- niques to catch a Siuslaw winter steelhead. Trout fishing in streams will reopen May 22, 2019. ALSEA RIVER: Winter steelhead Winter steelhead fishing has been fair on the Alsea. A good number of fish showed up at the Alsea hatchery trap after the recent rains. The numbers of later returning right maxillary clipped fish should increase with each rain event for the rest of January through the month of March. Cold weather, low flows, and clear water has slowed down the fishing this week but the next weather system hitting on Thursday should warms things up and get more fishing heading upstream to the hatchery located on the NF Alsea. The Alsea still gets a good amount of the early returning stock that peaks in December and January, as well as a later stock that peaks in February and March. Expect more fish to show up with each rise in the river level from now through April. Get Results...List With Melody.
