TripAd- visor, the world’s largest trav- el website, recently named Florence as one of its “25 Best Family Weekend Get- aways With Kids.” In introducing its recom- mendations, the site said “From kid-friendly adven- tures in the great outdoors to classic theme parks, we’re featuring our picks for the best family weekend trips in every U.S. region — so no matter where you live, there’s a convenient spot not too far away.” TripAdvisor touted Flor- ence as a place with “plenty of activities to do with kids — whether it’s a visit to Sand Master Park, the world’s first sandboard park, or spending the day on Heceta Beach. The entire family will love the Sea Lion Caves, a favor- ite roadside attraction and must-see spot. There’s mini golf, horseback riding on the beach, and giant dune buggy tours, too. With an activity to satisfy every mood, it’s a top choice if you’re looking for family weekend trips in the Northwest.” The area, known as Ore- gon’s Coastal Playground, was in prestigious company, sharing its top 25 status with Boston, Mass.; Washington, D.C.; Myrtle Beach, S.C.; Branson, Mo.; and Anaheim, Calif. In a similar 2017 USA To- day poll, Florence was voted second of the Top 20 Best Small Towns in the North- west. Florence was also recent- ly named The Oregonian/ OregonLive.com readers’ “Favorite Coastal Getaway,” Expedia.com’s “Most Beauti- ful Town,” and one of Flights. com’s “8 Coolest Places You Must Experience.” Two lo- cal destinations, the Oregon Dunes Recreation Area and Sea Lion Caves, made the Oregonian’s “Top 20 Oregon Landmarks.” “We’re really getting known to vacationers around the country, and even the world,” added Hannigan. “We even The Northwest region in- cluded West Yellowstone, Mont.; McCall, Idaho; Spo- kane, Wash.; and Seward, Alaska. “Once again, Florence is in some pretty prestigious company,” said Florence Area Chamber of Commerce executive director Bettina Hannigan. “In April, USA Today’s 10Best.com listed Florence as the country’s second-best small town for adventure. Florence beat out such adventure heavyweights as Sun Valley, Idaho; Tellu- ride, Colo.; Moab, Utah; Wat- kins Glen, N.Y.; Bar Harbor, Maine; and Stowe, Vermont.” Florence was the only Ore- gon destination on either list. had a Dutch vlogger visit and report favorably on Florence last year, and she’s followed by many thousands of avid world travelers across Eu- rope.” Hannigan pointed out that many of the accolades Florence has received in the last year or two emphasize that adrenaline junkies flock to Florence for some of the nation's best sand dunes for buggy rides, sand boarding, hiking, fat-tire biking, kite- boarding, wind surfing, hik- ing and camping in pristine ancient forests, fishing, crab- bing and clamming. “After all, we are Oregon’s Coastal Playground, and all these attributes and acco- lades prove it. Tickets are available for Home of Whatcha Brewing And Jerry On! 541-997-3815 88274 Rhododendron Drive Florence, Oregon 97439 Artists Bill Johnson wins ‘Best In Show’ for ‘Bots and Beings’ Local artist Bill Johnson won the Best of the Show award with his assemblage of found objects entitled “Boys Don’t Play with Dolls” for the community challenge “Bots and Beings,” hosted by Back- street Gallery. Johnson moved to Florence a few years ago after retiring as a residential designer. His assemblages have been shown at Greentrees, and he won an award at Portland’s “Art and Soul Show.” Johnson has also shown his assemblages at Flor- ence Regional Arts Alliance, where he is a member, and has also won several awards in other Backstreet Community Challenges. Johnson’s creations are available to view for the rest of November at Backstreet Gal- lery, 1421 Bay St.
