Library Tidings by Kevin Mittge Book Review “The Strange Case of Dr. Couney” by Dawn Raffel In “The Strange Case of Dr. Couney: How A Mysterious European Showman Saved Thousands of American Ba- bies,” author Dawn Raffel tells the spellbinding tale of a mysterious doctor who revo- lutionized neonatal care more than 100 years ago and 7,000 babies. Dr. Martin Couney’s story is a kaleidoscopic ride through the intersection of ebullient entrepreneurship, enlightened pediatric care and the wild culture of world’s fairs at the beginning of the American Century. As Raffel recounts, Couney used incubators and careful nursing to keep previously doomed infants alive, while displaying these babies along- side sword swallowers, beard- ed ladies and burlesque shows at Coney Island, Atlantic City and venues across the nation. How this turn-of-the-20th- century émigré became the savior to families with prema- ture infants — known then as “weaklings” — as he ignored the scorn of the medical estab- lishment and fought the rising popularity of eugenics is one of the most astounding stories of modern medicine. Couney, for all his opportu- nistic entrepreneurial gusto, is a surprisingly appealing char- acter, someone who genuine- ly cared for the well-being of his tiny patients. But he had something to hide… Drawing on historical doc- uments, original reportage and interviews with surviv- ing patients, Raffel tells the marvelously eccentric story of Couney’s mysterious carnival career, his larger-than-life per- sonality and his unprecedent- ed success as the savior of the fragile wonders that are tiny, tiny babies. demARTS The fourth annual demARTS will be held on Saturday, Oct. 6, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the library. This free celebra- tion of art and creativity for all ages will include dozens of art- ist demonstrations and how-to sessions, where you can learn about everything from cop- persmithing, calligraphy and beading, to origami, photogra- phy and more. Drop in or stay for the whole day. At noon, a special dedica- tion will be held in the lobby for the newly-named Mary Colgan-Bennetts Gallery. At 2:15 p.m. there will be a pre- view performance from Last Resort Players’ upcoming show, “Grey Gardens: The Mu- sical.” There will also be make- and-take crafts, a community art project, great door prizes and more. Upper Siuslaw Library Committee Seeks Members If you live in the upper Siu- slaw region, such as Mapleton, Deadwood, Swisshome and other communities, and you are a library user and sup- porter, we invite you to apply to serve on the Upper Siuslaw Library Committee. The group serves as an advisory com- mittee about upriver library needs, providing feedback to the library board and staff. The committee also helps plan events, such as the Mapleton Branch Library Open House. People can pick up applica- tions to join the committee at the Mapleton Branch, 88148 Riverview Ave., during regular business hours, noon to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. Western Lane Community Foundation grant applications open Western Lane Community Foundation (WLCF) has an- nounced the beginning of its 2019 grant cycle with the avail- ability of the Grant Application. The application can be found on its website located at www.wlc- fonline.org. Each year, WLCF awards sev- eral grants to local non-prof- it organizations for projects/ programs in its target area of western Lane County. Grants are awarded in the areas of ed- ucation, medicine and science, the arts, and social and civic services. In 2018, more than $73,000 was awarded to sever- al of these worthy causes. The annual amount to be awarded is determined by the performance of the invested portfolio of dis- cretionary funds during the cur- rent year. Grant requests for the 2019 grant cycle will be accepted be- tween Oct. 1 and Jan. 15, 2019. The application may be down- loaded at WLCF’s website and it is highly recommended that applicants review the Grant Guidelines included there. Completed applications must be postmarked or received no later than close of business on Jan. 15, 2019. Applications will be reviewed by the Board of Di- rectors and each applicant will be contacted by a Board Mem- ber for an interview regarding the request for funds. Grants will be selected in Feb- ruary and then awarded in late March. Selected grant recipi- ents will be required to submit a grant report by Aug. 31, 2019. Grant requests and awards Education Foundation seeks part-time development specialist The Siuslaw Education Foundation has received a grant from the Oregon Com- munity Foundation to hire a part-time development spe- cialist. This contracted posi- tion is for one year. The development specialist will work to create a blueprint for sustainable fundraising, grants acquisition, publicity, and financial management. The development specialist will work with the board to plan fundraisers, both passive and active, so watch for news of these. The request for proposals for the development specialist position will be available Oct. 1 with an anticipated start date of Nov. 1.
