COM SATURDAY EDITION ❘ SEPTEMBER 29, 2018 ❘ SECTION B Siuslaw News Sports & Recreation Mapleton School Board seeks input on potential new logo T IME O UT High school’s “Sailors” will stay, but students, community and school board will consider if it’s time for “Salty” to set sail. “Salty the Sailor,” which adornes the Mapleton High School gym floor, has been the symbol for The Sailors for generations. But in an effort to explore the idea of a more gender-neutral mas- cot, the school board is asking for community and student input. By Damien Sherwood Siuslaw News As Mapleton School District’s bond renovations near completion, December will see the resurfacing of the high school gym floor — and with it, the opportunity to update the face of its long-standing logo and mascot, "Salty the Sailor." In deciding on a new design, the Mapleton School Board is soliciting input from stu-dents and the community, keeping in theme with their name. “We’ll always be the Sailors,” said Mapleton School District Superintendent Jodi O’Mara. “The board is looking at what the students and community want as a logo to represent their school.” Among guidelines for designs, the school board is requesting “all submissions exhibit equity to all potential team participants,” and that they include a description of how the design incorporates that equality. DAMIEN SHERWOOD/SIUSLAW NEWS Entries are to fit into one of four categories: a mas- cot, a letter, a symbol or any combi-nation of the three. Both drawings and descriptive submissions can be accepted electronically through the school’s website or in paper form at the high school office, or by being handed directly to a school board member. To democratize the process, board members opted to include students in the decision-making. Once submissions are collected, the student body will vote for their favorites and the top two from each catego- ry (a total of eight) will be passed on to the school board for final selection. The new logo will be displayed on the new high school gym floor and the school district website. Tuesday, Siuslaw was on the road to face the No. 30-ranked Lady Falcons (1-4), where the Lady Vikings opened the match with a definitive 25-12 win that seemed to indicate what could be a sweep at Elmira. But the Falcons rallied in the second set, taking the game to extra points to even up the match with a slim 26-24 win. Game three was also close, with the lead changing several times before Elmira got the advantage with a 25-21 win. From there, Siuslaw's early win faded quickly as the Falcons claimed the match with a 25-18 win in the fourth set. Seniors Makenzie York and Alyssa Richards led scoring, York with 15 kills and 5 aces to go with 10 digs.
