T he eighth annual Power of Flor- ence, a city-wide day of volun- teering and helping others, is scheduled for Saturday, July 21. The Florence City Council officially pro- claimed the third Saturday each July as a day dedicated to joining together to make a difference by fundraising, vol- unteering and attending community service projects. This day of making a difference starts with a Power Walk led by Mayor Joe Henry and Police Chief Tom Turn- er. It continues with service projects all over town as well as the “Party in the Parking Lot” at Grocery Outlet. This party will feature entertainment by the CROW kids and Jason Woods’ vocal students. The Humane Society will be on hand with a delicious BBQ as will several local nonprofits including the Lion Club who will be offering free health screenings. Over the past seven years, the Power of Florence has had more than 7,500 volunteers join together to beautify our parks and schools, raise money for local non-profits and collect thou- sands of pounds of food for Florence Food Share. The Power of Florence was de- veloped by Kaylee Graham who has inspired so many with her love of volunteerism and giving back to the community she loves so dearly. But as she graduates from Siuslaw High and moves on to college, she passes the torch to Ava Glowacki and Faith Lumadue. Seventh-graders Ava and Faith share Kaylee’s belief that we all have the pow- er to make our community stronger by pitching in and having fun together. If you or your organization would like to join us for the Power of Flor- ence, email Ava and Faith at power- offlorence@hotmail.com or call for more information at 541-997-9819.
