The high visibility DUII enforcement is scheduled for Friday, May 25 through Monday, May 28 (Me- morial Day weekend). The Florence Police Depart- ment reminds people that pre- scription drugs, over-the-count- er medications, and illegal drugs may cause impairment alone or in combination with each oth- er and/or with alcohol. In every State and the District of Colum- bia, impaired driving is illegal. Whether by drugs — legal or illegal — alcohol, or a combina- tion of both drugs and alcohol, impaired driving puts the driver, their passengers and other road users at risk. In the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s National Roadside Survey con- ducted in 2013-14, 20 percent of drivers that were surveyed tested positive for potentially impairing drugs. The Florence Police Depart- ment has specially trained offi- cers that will be on the lookout for drug and/or alcohol impaired drivers in addition to normal pa- trols during the month of May. During the month of April, the Florence Police Department participated in additional DUII patrols with grant funding pro- vided by Oregon Impact. The Florence Police Depart- ment did not make any DUII arrests during the additional grant funded shifts but did make 10 DUII arrests throughout the month of April.
