SIUSLAW NEWS | SATURDAY, MAY 12, 2018 | 3A G ENERAL N EWS Port of Siuslaw seeks to fill two board vacancies The Port of Siuslaw Board of Commissioners will ap- point a district citizen to fill the Position 2 vacancy cre- ated by the recent resigna- tion of Nancy Rickard and Position 4 vacancy created by the recent resignation of David Huntington following his transition to Port Man- ager. The term of the appointee will expire June 30, 2019, at which time an elected suc- cessor will be seated. Persons wishing to be ap- pointed to the Port Com- mission vacancy should obtain an application from the Port office, 100 Harbor St., or online at www.portof siuslaw.com. Applications will be ac- cepted until 5 p.m. Friday, June 15. Applicants must be registered voters residing within the Port of Siuslaw district. Applicants may be invited for interviews. The Port of Siuslaw is a Special District authorized ‘Pride’ beautifies the streets of Mapleton by Oregon law to help sus- tain the economic vitality of western Lane County. The district boundary encom- passes most of the Siuslaw River watershed, including the coastal communities of Florence and Dunes City and extending upriver to Mapleton, Walton, Lorane and Blachly. The Port is the sponsor of the federal maritime invest- ment in Lane County for maintenance of the channel, harbor, jetties and navigable ocean bars. The Port also has significant authority un- der Oregon statute for local economic development and infrastructure projects that encourage job creation and tourism. The Port of Siuslaw Board of Commissioners meet reg- ularly at 7 p.m. on the third Wednesday of each month. For more information, contact the Port office at 541-997-3426. T he Mapleton Pride Clean Up Challenge was a resounding success Saturday as 42 volunteers of all ages showed up to help clean up the streets of Mapleton. The second year of what organizers hope is an annual event resulted in a pickup truck filled to the brim with trash collect- ed by participants, along with new flowers plant- ed in the area and local grounds trimmed and mowed. The event was also a contest, with Ma- pleton Fire Department teamed with Mapleton School ties with the Community Members team for picking up the most trash. Mapleton School won the “Most Volunteers category. Each mem- ber received a gift card to Rosa’s in Florence. Correction In the front-page article, “City Council Welcomes Civic Engagement,” in the Wednesday, May 9 edition of the Siuslaw News, it was stated that councilor Susy Lacer had served two terms; councilor Lacer served one term on the Florence City Council and is not running for another 4-year term.
