B Y N ED H ICKSON 12:27pm / 0.8 Siuslaw News n the summer of 1977, I was hired as the head coach of Siuslaw High School baseball. Truth be told, I was not ready to be a head baseball coach. Yes, I played three years of baseball at Pacific University but I was a pitcher. Most college pitch- ers only pitch. I had no at bats, and my fielding was limited to cov- ering first base and fielding bunts. When we were fin- ished with that phase of practice, we ran and ran, And ran. There were times I felt like a long distance track runner. Our pitching coach- es’ motto was “As the legs go, so does the heart.” So when the rest of the team practiced, the pitchers ran or had strength and condi- tioning drills in the weight room. Both teams went scoreless in the V IKINGS : 2 B ULLDOGS : 13 3:16am / 2.4 3:15pm / 1.2 Siuslaw had its hands full on the dia- monds both at home and away Tuesday, with the Lady Vikings (4-6) on the road at North Bend (4-2), and the Viking boys (2-8) at home against the Bulldogs (9-1). Ranked No. 6 in the OSAA’s 4A division, North Bend came to John “Jiggs” Dodson Field with strong pitching and senior experience — both of which gave Siuslaw trouble.
