n the summer of 1977, I
was hired as the head
coach of Siuslaw High
School baseball. Truth be
told, I was not ready to be a
head baseball coach.
Yes, I played three years
of baseball at Pacific
University but I was a
pitcher. Most college pitch-
ers only pitch.
I had no at bats, and my
fielding was limited to cov-
ering first base and fielding
bunts. When we were fin-
ished with that phase of
practice, we ran and ran,
And ran.
There were times I felt
like a long distance track
runner. Our pitching coach-
es’ motto was “As the legs
go, so does the heart.” So
when the rest of the team
practiced, the pitchers ran
or had strength and condi-
tioning drills in the weight
room.

“The kids were resilient,” said
Siuslaw coach Tom Shinn. “In the third
inning where North Bend put up six
runs, it would have been easy to kind of
roll over — but our kids continued to
scrap and work hard.”
Heading into the third inning,
Siuslaw was only trailing 2-1 until
North Bend struck with a two-out, 6-
run series that left the Viks down by 7.
Both teams went scoreless in the

Tuesday, with the Lady Vikings (4-6)
on the road at North Bend (4-2), and
the Viking boys (2-8) at home against
the Bulldogs (9-1).
Ranked No. 6 in the OSAA’s 4A
division, North Bend came to John
“Jiggs” Dodson Field with strong
pitching and senior experience — both
of which gave Siuslaw trouble.

As Siuslaw’s track and field season
approaches the finish with district
competition next weekend (May 11
and 12), the Vikings spent Tuesday
honing their technique at Frank Shriver
Field in North Bend, where team mem-
bers claimed a total of seven wins.
Among them was senior Trent Reavis,
in his first appearance following knee
surgery prior to the start of track sea-
son.

Reavis, a 6-foot-7 senior who holds
the school record in both the javelin
(181 feet, 11 inches IAAF) and discus
(160-12), received a medical release a
week earlier and power-threw the shot
47-2.75 for his first event of the season
— and the win.
Other victories on the day for the
Viking boys included fellow seniors
KC Tatum in the discus (127-01) and
Kyle King in the triple jump (39.11.5),
as well as freshmen Ryan Jennings in
the 400-meter race (58.28) and Skylar
Loomis in the javelin (143-01).
Jennings was also third in the 300
hurdles (47.99); Reavis was third in the
javelin (134-0); Tatum was second in
the shot put (42-7); junior Korbin
English landed second in the long
jump at 18-9; sophomore Ricky Loza-
Sanchez was fourth in both the 1,500
meters (4:58.49) and 3,000 meters
(11:05.48); and senior Jake Hickson
cleared 5-2 in the high jump for fourth
place.
