2 A SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ SATURDAY, APRIL 28, 2018 OBITUARIES MARKEE —Darleen Markee of Florence passed away peacefully at home of acute leukemia on April 19, 2018. She was born May 30, 1937 in Los Angeles, Calif. She devoted her whole life to being a mother to her four children, K a t h i e , Scott, Jeff a n d Lauralyn. She was an Darleen outstanding Markee homemaker for the children and her hus- band, Dick. The couple celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary last December. Darleen was an artist, enjoy- ing many different types of media. For the last 20 years, she spent most of her time quilting. She was an expert quilter and won many awards, even winning the Mayor’s Trophy one year. Darleen was a member of the American Quilter’s Society and Florence Quilt Guild, but her favorite meetings were with a small group of local ladies who call themselves “Fabric Fondlers.” She would not say bad things about people, even if people did bad things. She made a sign for a wall of her home with the children were growing up which read: “If you can’t say something nice about a person, don’t say anything.” As Lauralyn said to the fam- ily shortly after Darleen passed, “If anyone deserves to be an angel, she does.” Darleen will be sorely missed by her beloved grand- children, Sara, Kloe, Chris, Ricky, Marissa, Alyssa and Kelsey, and by us all. Rest in peace, my love. Service for the family will be at a later date. NICKOLAUS—In loving memory of Christopher P a u l Nickolaus, 1959 to 2018. On Monday, April 30, the contractor for the Harbor Vista Campground Sewer Collection System Project will be extend- ing the new sewer system into Rhododendron Drive. This will necessitate the closure of the south bound travel lane of Rhododendron Drive at South Harbor Vista Drive. Specifically, the contractor will be installing a section of gravi- ty sewer line and a manhole. Only one lane will be closed. BROWN—Michael Alan Brown, 69, passed away April 8, 2018, at his home in Westlake, Ore. Mike was born June 23, 1948, in San Rafael, Calif., to Acel Brown and Barbara La Valley. He grew up in the city in the St. John’s area of Portland, O r e . However, Michael before sen- Brown ior year, his family relocated to rural Prescott, Wash., where he grad- uated in a class of nine stu- dents. He served in the U.S. Navy for four years, including a tour in Vietnam on the flight deck aboard the USS Hancock. He married Marjorie Brewder in 1971 in Richland, Wash. They lived in Kennewick, where Mike joined the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and began an apprenticeship in the electrical trade in local 112 at Hanford. They moved to Kodiak, Alaska., where Mike commer- cial fished. He then finished his apprenticeship in local 1547, where he worked in Kodiak and also traveled to the mainland to work on the Valdez pipeline. In 1977, they moved to Hillsboro, Ore., where he con- tinued to work in the electrical trade and made local 48 his home. He was a member of all three local unions. When Mike retired in 2002, they moved to Westlake, Ore., where they built their dream home. Mike took pride in the fact that he did all of the elec- trical work himself. Their home in Florence became the family gathering place where many years of memories were made. Mike was an avid outdoors- man. He was an accomplished hunter and fisherman. Many of the best times in his life were spent camping, hunting or ocean fishing with his family. He passed on his love of the outdoors to his children and grandchildren. They all brought out the best in him and held a special place in his heart. Mike obtained a general HAM radio operator’s license in the eighth grade. He built much of his own equipment. He was a born handyman and was always working on various projects. He also enjoyed culti- vating and tending in his green- house. Mike is survived by his wife, Marji; his children: Ryan and wife Heather, Darren and wife Erin, Jennifer and husband Steve; five grandchildren: Wyatt, Gavin, Emma, Charlotte and Anthony; and his brother, Jeff. He is preceded in death by his two other brothers, Bob and Ken. A military service is sched- uled for June 22, at 2:30 p.m., at the Willamette National Cemetery in Portland. All are welcome to attend and cele- brate Mike’s life. His loved ones hold fond memories of Chris who always lived life with a robust spirit of self-reliance, love of the out- doors, a high regard for honor- ing and preserving wild places, and taking joy from hard work, simple pleasures and the com- panionship of those closest to him. Chris sought joy on moun- tain trails and beaches sur- rounding Orange County Calif., where he grew up. Chris also lived and explored wilder- ness in Western Colorado for many years before moving to Florence in the 1990s. His wife and family would like to thank all those who have shared their condolences and prayers during Chris’ brave struggle with cancer this past year. We pray that his new jour- ney will be one of new adven- tures for his thirsty soul and filled with peace, joy and The Lord’s protection. At Chris’ request, his ashes will be spread in some of the wild places that brought him the greatest joy. A memorial service will be held at a future date.
