2 B SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 17, 2018 Siuslaw High School gym dedicated to Glenn Butler D A special plaque in honor of Glenn Butler was unvieled during a special dedication ceremony held in the gym- nasium on Jan. 12 at Siuslaw High School, presented by the Siuslaw Athletic Booster Club. uring halftime of Friday’s boys basket- ball game this past Friday, a full gym of Siuslaw fans honored past Siuslaw High School Principal and 97J School District Superintendent Glenn Butler during an official dedication of the gymnasium in his name. Butler, who served the district for 26 years beginning in 1968, is credited with ushering in and supporting the expansion of the school’s sports programs, as well as helping pioneer the implementation of women’s sports programs at Siuslaw and within the district. A special plaque, fixed above the northwest doorway, was presented by Siuslaw Athletic Booster Club members Gina Castro-Brandt and Eric Tanikawa, and current school superintend- ent Andy Grzeskowiak. Castro-Brandt, a biology teacher at Siuslaw High School and a school alumni, described Florence Elks Lodge to host annual Hoop Shoot Boys and girls from Florence, Mapleton and Reedsport who are between the ages of 8 to 13 years old, are invited to participate in the annual Elks Lodge Hoop Shoot on Saturday, Jan. 20. The hoop shoot will take place at the Siuslaw Elementary School gymnasi- um from 9 a.m. to noon All athletes wishing to par- ticipate will be shooting 10 free throws to qualify for the final shoot-off of 15 additional free throws. The top boy and girl finish- ers from each division will qualify for the district wide shoot out in Seaside, Ore., on Feb. 4. Athletes who make the finals will advance to the statewide competition in Milwaukee, Ore. on Feb. 11. If they win their division (8- and 9-year-olds, 10- and 11- year-olds and 12- and 13-year- olds), they will then compete in the Pacific Northwest tour- nament in Portland, Ore., March 11. If successful at this level, The Florence Elks Lodge will send them and a parent to the National Shoot Out on April 22, in Chicago, Ill. Parents, friends, family are welcome to attend the compe- tition. Those eligible are required to be 8 years old on or before April 01, 2018 and cannot become 14 on or before April 1, 2018. Butler as someone who “ran a tight ship, but always did so with caring and respect.” Butler’s family, which includes two generations of Siuslaw alumni in his son and two grandchildren, were on hand for the dedication. Wrestlers from 1B In addition, junior Riley Jennings (138 lbs.) and senior Jay Goldblatt (152 lbs.) each placed fourth. Over all, Siuslaw (146 points) placed fifth in team scoring, with Elmira winning the team title at 230.5 points. Cottage Grove placed sec- ond with 203 points, followed by Churchill (152) and Sutherlin in fourth place (148 points.) The Vikings also got scor- ing from senior 145-pounder Salvador Sierra with a fifth- place finish, and sophomore Gavin Fletcher, who placed sixth at 126 lbs. Sophomores Matthew Horrillo (285 lbs.) and Luiz Infante-Marquez (182 lbs.) scored 4 points and 3 points, respectively, for Siuslaw. Friday, Siuslaw will com- pete at the Far West League dual meet at South Umpqua High School before heading to the Sutherlin Classic on Saturday.
