THE LOCAL REGION
It was a week on the road
for Mapleton as its girls and
boys basketball team traveled
to
Siletz, Alsea
and
Eddyville, with both Sailors
teams returning empty-hand-
ed in spite of solid efforts.
For the boys, Tuesday
night had them on the road at
Siletz Valley, where they put
themselves in a position to
catch the Warriors, who held
a small 9-point lead entering
the half.
“We came in with a game
plan to make them beat us
from the outside,” said
Mapleton boys coach Eric
Wolgamott, now in his first
season at the Sailors’ helm.

ighteen teams from as far south
as Gold Beach and Sutherlin, as
well as schools as large as
Churchill and as small as Crow, were
on hand for last weekend’s annual
Nick Lutz Invitational at Siuslaw High
School.

Hosted by the Viking wrestling
team, matches began at 9 a.m. and con-
tinued nearly non-stop throughout the
day until the championship rounds late
that afternoon. When the final medals
were handed out and scores were tabu-
lated, seven Viking wrestlers had
placed, including a tournament title at
126 lbs. for senior Richard Huff.
Huff pinned all four of his oppo-
nents to sweep the bracket.
Siuslaw had a strong showing from
its underclassman-dominated line-up,
with freshman Elijah LaCosse placing
second at 120 lbs. for the Viks, along
with fourth-place finishes for fellow
freshmen Brady Libby (113 lbs.) and
Ryan Jennings (138 lbs).

The girls opened the Far West
League season on Glenn Butler Court
Friday night, keeping things close for
most of the first quarter as junior
Alyssa Richards nabbed a rebound to
tie the game at 6-6 with 3:12 remaining.
The Lady Viks then moved ahead on
a bucket from freshman Lindsey Long
and a freethrow from junior Madison
Reynolds for a 9-6 lead. But over the
next 2 minutes, Marshfield grabbed
four steals on a 16-2 run that put the
Lady Pirates up 22-11 to start the sec-
ond period.
From there, Marshfield continued to
build on its lead to an eventual 67-27
win.
