2 A SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 29, 2017 OBITUARIES SLEIGHT—Michael E. Sleight, of Florence, passed away at home with his family Nov. 23, 2017, from cancer- related causes. Born Jan. 21, 1953, to Verna Lindgren, Mike grew up in Oregon’s Rogue Valley. There, he soon had a younger brother and sister, as well as a large extended family of a u n t s , u n c l e s , Michael cousins and Sleight friends. He had many cherished memories of camping, fishing, smudging, hiking and shenanigans. He was a boy scout. As a young man, Mike travelled the south- ern United States and retained a lifelong love of the south, southern cooking and the friends he made there. He always returned to Oregon, calling it the greatest place on earth. Mike tried a wide variety of jobs in his early life including logging, bartending, tavern ownership and mill work. After marrying Sally in 1981, he settled on energy conserva- tion as a career. In 1989, they moved their small family of four to Florence, where he spent 22 years at Central Lincoln PUD as an energy conservation ana- lyst. Retiring in 2010, Mike enjoyed long walks with their dog, Tater, gardening at the Sleight Estates, cold beer and pondering, visiting with friends on the porch, arguing politics and studying scripture. He was a lifelong U of O Duck fan, win or lose. He loved his family and many friends. His passion was white water rafting. He will be loved forever and greatly missed by Sally, his wife of 36 years; daughter Alexis Sleight; son John Sleight; daughter-in-law Mendy; perfect granddaughters Kayden and Bailey; his broth- er, Gary Sleight; his sisters Barbara Lozar and Linda Debrick; plus a multitude of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, Dec. 8, at the Community Baptist Church, 4590 Highway 101 in Florence. Burns’s Riverside Chapel Florence Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. ANTHONY—John Avit Anthony, 82, of Florence, passed away Nov. 15, 2017. Born Oct. 16, 1935, John grew up on a home- stead fami- ly farm in Ellensburg, Wash., with his parents and two sisters. As a John Anthony young man, he left the farm for Seattle to become a pharmacist at the UW School of Pharmacy. As a proud Husky, he enjoyed a 40-year career in both Washington and Oregon, until retiring along the Oregon Coast. John was rarely seen without a University of Washington baseball cap on, and was an equally avid Seattle Mariners fan. John is survived by his best friend and wife of over 51 years, Darleen. Throughout their long mar- riage, Yellowstone National Park was a favorite travel desti- nation and they were able to celebrate 50 years of marriage last summer by renewing their vows alongside the Yellowstone River with family. John will be remembered as a kind and caring man whose wife, children, many grandchil- dren, and dog meant the world to him. Despite recent health chal- lenges, his wit, good charm and positive attitude never dimin- ished, always “game” for what- ever adventure his family threw at him. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Medic One Foundation, 11747 NE 1st St, Suite 310, Bellevue, Wash., 98005. Over-the-air TV channels require re-scan Dec. 7 The sale of spectrum by the FCC requires that West Lane Translator, Inc., change chan- nels for three of its transla- tors, KVAL (CBS), KMTR (NBC) and KLSR (Fox). The change is scheduled to occur on Thursday, Dec. 7, between noon and 4 p.m. During this time, antenna- based viewers will lose all stations and need to re-scan their televisions to find the new channels. After setting your TV to Scan (through the Menu option), and assuming that it successfully finds the transla- tors on their new channels, nothing will look different to the viewer. The three network stations will once again appear on the same channel selections as before (channels 13, 16 and 34). Down time will affect all over-the-air TV channels and is expected to be a few hours due to the complexity of the changes. West Lane Translator coop- erated with other broadcasters and engineers in Lane County to find interference-free schemes of channel assign- ment. Much gratitude is due to those who figured out this difficult frequency allotment puzzle. WLT regrets this inconven- ience to viewers and will work diligently to restore the channels as quickly as possi- ble. For more information, go to www.westlanetv.org/HD TV/Repack.
