In this weekly column, I share what I’ve learned about sports from these multiple points of view.) Parking fee to be waived at state park on ‘Green Friday’ Oregon State Parks invites the pub- lic to play for free on Friday, Nov. 24, in celebration of “Green Friday,” the day after Thanksgiving. The agency will waive day-use parking fees in 26 Oregon State Parks that day. “We started this tradition three years ago to encourage people to opt out- side,” said OPRD director Lisa Sumption. “Why not get some fresh air with your family and create a new hol- iday tradition?” To help celebrate, the nonprofit Oregon State Parks Foundation is offering free hot drinks and snacks at Tryon Creek State Natural Area, Fort Stevens State Park, Rooster Rock State Park, Silver Falls State Park and Cape Blanco State Park. In addition, refreshments — donat- ed by Starbucks Coffee, Nossa Familia Coffee, Smith Tea, Stevens Cocoa and R EADY , SET ... KIND Bars — will be served by vol- unteers from the local Friends Groups. Parking is free year-round at almost all state parks; the waiver applies to the 26 parks that charge $5 daily for parking. M . irst, congratulations to the Siuslaw boys and girls cross coun- try teams for finishing in the top 10 at the 4A state cross country meet last week. It is a testament to all their work not just during the season but throughout the year. Coaches have a variety of ways to facilitate team- work. Winning happens with mutual respect and cooperation between play- ers and coaches. It is earned with ethical behavior on and off the field or court. A coach supports his players and works as long and hard as they do. Some coaches use team bonding experiences away from their sport. It may be as simple as attending a motivational movie, having a guest speaker or a team breakfast. In 1979, I was an assis- tant coach for the Vikings. The area offers some of the most productive and scenic warmwater fishing in the state with excellent fishing for bass and panfish available in large waters such as Mercer Lake, Siltcoos Lake, and Tahkenitch Lake. Tenmile Lakes located north of Coos Bay is renowned for its crappie and trophy bass fisheries, and the site of bass tourna- ments. Anglers should also try one of the many smaller lakes scattered along Highway 101 and through- out the coastal dunes area, or Triangle Lake closer to the Willamette Valley. The warmwater fish available in the south coast area include: Largemouth See FISHING 3B All this week, dozens of boys and girls from Siuslaw Elementary School have been participating in a Li’l Toads wrestling clinic after school from 3:15 to 5 p.m. each day. Coaches from the Siuslaw High School wrestling program, middle school program as well as past Viking wrestlers have been working with participants in preparation for a tournament tonight in the high school gym. The public is invited, and admission is $5 for adults or $3 for students grades K-12. All proceeds will go to support local wrestling programs. Free educational presentations continue tomorrow at Cape Perpetua visitors Center Educational presentations and events that began in October are con- tinuing at the at Cape Perpetua Visitors Center. In addition to the hiking, tidepooling and exploring always available, visitors can enjoy a variety of speakers and topics every Saturday Dec. 16 during the Cape Perpetua Speaker Series as well as other special events. All events are free and held at the Cape Perpetua Visitor Center unless otherwise noted. • Saturday, Nov. 11: Mushrooms and Lichens Presentation with BioBlitz Mushroom Hike, 1 p.m. Anna Moore is an amateur mycologist and photog- rapher who will share her knowledge from over 30 years of foraging. Moore’s presentation will include a slide show of the fantastic habitat of the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area and she will empha- size the diversity of fungi found in the dunes and forests from Reedsport to Cape Perpetua. This presentation will be followed by a BioBlitz walk through the forest where visitors can help locate, identi- fy, and record different species of fungus using the iNaturalist app. • Thursday, Nov. 16: 5th Annual Cape Perpetua Land- Sea Symposium, 5 to 8 p.m. at Yachats Commons Building, in Yachats. The Cape Perpetua Land- Sea Symposium is a community event aimed at promoting local stew- ardship efforts and raising awareness about current research being con- ducted within Cape Perpetua nearshore and adjacent watersheds.
