Dr. Marcia Pearce will lead the worship service at the Florence Unitarian Universalist Fellowship on Sunday, Sept. 3, from 10 to 11 a.m. The title of the message will be “There is Always a Greater Yet To Be.” Pearce suggests, “When most of us were children, we were probably asked what we wanted to be when we ‘grew up.’ Comparatively, few of us end up actually becoming astronauts, firemen or Lady Gaga. Have you ever won- dered why?” Pearce will discuss the dif- ference between wanting to be and wanting to become. Peter DeFazio made one final stop in Florence on his trip to host Town Halls across the voting district. The Town Hall was hosted at Siuslaw Middle School on Aug. 29, with around 100 people in attendance. DeFazio explained his major focuses for the upcoming session: Aviation, trans- portation and infrastructure. Questions posed by the audience included a variety of topics, from long-standing concerns such as gun control and the environment, to more recent ones such as net neutrality and social security. To demonstrate how many more people have become politically active, DeFazio also provided a bar graph of how many letters he has received each year. The bar for 2017 tow- ered above the others, with even more months to go this year. “People are newly engaged [in politics] because of their concerns,” he said. “I just urge them to keep an eye on things.” — Submitted by Hanna Anderson, Siuslaw News Intern A Alzheimer’s Assoc. to offer class in Florence The Alzheimer ’s Association Oregon Chapter (AAOC) will hold a free com- munity education class, “Effective Communication Strategies,” from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 7, at the Siuslaw Public Library, 1460 Ninth St. Communication is more than just talking and listening — it’s also about sending and receiv- ing messages through attitude, tone of voice, facial expres- sions and body language. As people with Alzheimer’s dis- ease and other dementias progress in their journey and the ability to use words is lost, families need new ways to con- nect. Explore how communication takes place when someone has Alzheimer’s, learn to decode the verbal and behavioral mes- sages delivered by someone with dementia and identify strategies to help connect and communicate at each stage of the disease.
