The reservoir is one of many that have been stocked with trophy-sized trout throughout Oregon. T housands of extra-large rainbow trout are being released at loca- tions around the state this sum- mer as the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) enters the sec- ond year of its “Trophy Trout” pro- gram. Bred to fight, more large rainbow trout than ever are being released at locations around the state this year, adding excitement to what is already one of Oregon’s most popular outdoor activities: trout fishing. ODFW consid- ers a trout a “trophy” once it reaches a length of 15 inches. The department will release more than 65,000 of these fish into Oregon waters in 2017. Water temps are great and fish should be hungry, so go catch them. Stocking of Mid Coast lakes has ended for the year. The 2017 trout stock- ing schedule is available online. SILETZ RIVER: Steelhead, Chinook, trout The Siletz River opened for wild Chinook on April 1 (1 per day and 2 per sea- son). Spring Chinook and summer steelhead are being caught, and fishing should continue to improve. ODFW is recycling hatchery summer steelhead from the Siletz Falls trap, giving anglers another shot at catching these fish in the gorge. Casting spinners, drift- ing bait or using a bobber and jig can be effective. Trout season opened May 22, and there should be some nice cutthroat around.
