This 11-pound trophy trout caught in Haystack Reservoir in April. The reservoir is one of many that have
been stocked with trophy-sized trout throughout Oregon.
T
housands of extra-large rainbow
trout are being released at loca-
tions around the state this sum-
mer as the Oregon Department of Fish
and Wildlife (ODFW) enters the sec-
ond year of its “Trophy Trout” pro-
gram.
Bred to fight, more large rainbow
trout than ever are being released at
locations around the state this year,
adding excitement to what is already
one of Oregon’s most popular outdoor
activities: trout fishing. ODFW consid-
ers a trout a “trophy” once it reaches a
length of 15 inches. The department
will release more than 65,000 of these
fish into Oregon waters in 2017.

ODFW has been releasing large
trout for years into many lakes around
the state. However, during the 2015
legislative session, Rep. Greg Smith
(R-Heppner) worked with ODFW to

mix through a Trophy Trout pilot pro-

Most of the North Coast
lakes were stocked with
trout recently. Water temps
are great and fish should be
hungry, so go catch them.
Stocking of Mid Coast
lakes has ended for the
year. The 2017 trout stock-
ing schedule is available
online.

The Siletz River opened
for wild Chinook on April

being caught, and fishing
should continue to
improve.
ODFW is recycling
hatchery summer steelhead
from the Siletz Falls trap,
giving anglers another shot
at catching these fish in the
gorge.
Casting spinners, drift-
ing bait or using a bobber
