T en student athletes from Siuslaw and Mapleton high schools will be rec- ognized tonight, May 31, as the finalists for the Coast Radio/Siuslaw News/Sports Club Athletes of the Year. One boy and one girl will be given this year’s awards that have been presented annually since 1989. Among the six male athletes who are finalists are Hunter Simington from Mapleton, along with Jared Brandt, Trent Reavis, Brogan Cornish, Jack Pickell and Richard Huff from Siuslaw. Celie Mans, Destinie Tatum, Claire Waggoner and Carissa Oliver, all of Siuslaw, are the four young female ath- letes who achieved the same honor. In all, 38 different students were presented with either the Athlete of the Week or Honorable Mention between September and May. Six of the 10 finalists com- peted in three sports this year; four of them won individual state championships. All received recognition from coaches in either the Mountain West or Far West Leagues for their hard work and skill. The 10 finalists, plus the 28 others who received weekly honors, will be recognized during tonight’s recognition dessert hosted by the Siuslaw Athletic Boosters, which begins at 6:30 p.m. The Athlete of the Year awards will be announced and presented. There is no charge for admission and the evening is open to all. Sports Club members sup- port the weekly program with recognition in every Wednesday edition of the Siuslaw News, and throughout the week on Coast Radio KCST/KCFM. SALMON RIVER: Lions look to land bass this weekend The Florence Siuslaw Lions Club will be hosting its 35th annual Elliott Fun Bass Tournament the weekend of June 3 and 4. Named in memory of long-time Lions Club member George Elliott, who originated the fundraiser as a joint venture with the Flornece Bass Club, the tournament will be held at Darling’s Resort on Siltcoos Lake. Two-person teams will launch at 6 a.m. and fish until weigh-in at 2 p.m. both days, with all fish to be released back into the lake. Trophies will be presented after Sunday’s weigh-in. Contest entry fee is $60 per team. During the two-day tournament, the Lions Club will be serving hamburg- ers and hot dogs from its food wagon. There will also be tickets available for a special raffle on Saturday. Raffle prizes will include items donated by See LIONS 3B Annual Surfriders’ youth surfing competition June 17 NEWPORT — The Surfrider Foundation’s Newport, Siuslaw and Portland Chapters have announced they will be hosting the ninth annual Otter Rock ’n’ Roll Youth Surf Competition and Beach Cleanup Challenge in celebration of International Surfing Day. Observed globally, International Surfing Day celebrates the sport of surfing and helps raise awareness about issues facing our ocean, waves and beaches. The Otter Rock n Roll will take place Saturday, June 17, at Otter Rock/Devil’s Punchbowl State Park The Alsea River and list- ed tributaries closed for hatchery steelhead on May 1 to protect spawning wild steelhead. from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. An age-18-and- under youth surf contest, the event is open to surfers of all skill levels, is family-friendly and welcomes the gen- eral beachgoing public. Event pre-registration is $25 at See Steelhead The Salmon River closed for wild and hatch- ery steelhead on March 31 to protect spawning wild steelhead. SILETZ RIVER: Steelhead, Chinook The Siletz River opened for wild Chinook on April 1 (1 per day and 2 per sea- son). A few summer steel- head are starting to be caught in the lower river. Drift boaters are having success from Moonshine Park to Siletz and bank anglers are catching hatch- ery fish in the Siletz gorge.
