from Siuslaw and
Mapleton
high
schools will be rec-
ognized tonight, May 31, as
the finalists for the Coast
Radio/Siuslaw News/Sports
Club Athletes of the Year.
One boy and one girl will be
given this year’s awards that
have been presented annually
since 1989.
Among the six male athletes
who are finalists are Hunter
Simington from Mapleton,
along with Jared Brandt, Trent
Reavis, Brogan Cornish, Jack
Pickell and Richard Huff from
Siuslaw.
Celie
Mans,
Destinie
Tatum, Claire Waggoner and
Carissa Oliver, all of Siuslaw,
are the four young female ath-
letes who achieved the same
honor.
In all, 38 different students
were presented with either the
Athlete of the Week or
Honorable Mention between
September and May.
Six of the 10 finalists com-
peted in three sports this year;
four of them won individual
state championships.
All received recognition
from coaches in either the
Mountain West or Far West
Leagues for their hard work
and skill.
The 10 finalists, plus the 28
others who received weekly
honors, will be recognized
during tonight’s recognition
dessert hosted by the Siuslaw
Athletic Boosters, which
begins at 6:30 p.m.
The Athlete of the Year
awards will be announced and
presented.
There is no charge for
admission and the evening is
open to all.

SALMON RIVER:
Lions look to land bass this weekend
The Florence Siuslaw Lions Club
will be hosting its 35th annual Elliott
Fun Bass Tournament the weekend of
June 3 and 4.
Named in memory of long-time
Lions Club member George Elliott,
who originated the fundraiser as a
joint venture with the Flornece Bass
Club, the tournament will be held at
Darling’s Resort on Siltcoos Lake.
Two-person teams will launch at 6
a.m. and fish until weigh-in at 2 p.m.
both days, with all fish to be released
back into the lake. Trophies will be
presented after Sunday’s weigh-in.
Contest entry fee is $60 per team.
During the two-day tournament, the
Lions Club will be serving hamburg-
ers and hot dogs from its food wagon.
There will also be tickets available for
a special raffle on Saturday. Raffle
prizes will include items donated by

Otter Rock ’n’ Roll Youth Surf
Competition and Beach Cleanup

The Siletz River opened
for wild Chinook on April
1 (1 per day and 2 per sea-
son). A few summer steel-
head are starting to be
caught in the lower river.
Drift boaters are having
success from Moonshine
Park to Siletz and bank
anglers are catching hatch-
ery fish in the Siletz gorge.
Casting spinners, drift-
ing bait or using a bobber
and jig can be effective.
