4 B SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ SATURDAY, APRIL 22, 2017 THESIUSLAWNEWS . COM ❘ / SIUSLAWNEWS ❘ @ SIUSLAWNEWS Community News Hendricks named Volunteer of the Month at OCHS The Oregon Coast Humane Society (OCHS) recently named Pat Hendricks as April’s Volunteer of the Month. Hendricks, a retired school teacher from northern California, and her hus- band moved to Florence in 2002 and quickly became involved in their new community through volunteer work for numerous nonprofit organizations, including OCHS. During some of the animal shelter’s leanest times, Hendricks took it on her- self to contact Friskies Dog Food cor- porate offices to personally purchase two large pallets of dry dog food and two pallets of dry cat food to help feed the animals. The Friskies corporation then made a very substantial donation of its own of dog and cat food to help out the struggling shelter’s dogs and cats — getting the shelter through a difficult time. Hendricks has helped in many other significant ways, including donating hundreds of volunteer hours over the years working at the Thrift Store. She COURTESY PHOTO Pat Hendricks can often be found working in the backroom sorting and organizing dona- tions. She said she enjoys spending time occasionally at the shelter with the cats and kittens, giving them one-on- one time, helping to socialize them so that they are more readily adoptable. One cat was particularly special to her because he had been abused or traumatized in some way, and initially would not even look at her and kept his eyes closed. Hendricks began coming often to spend time with him in an effort to comfort and win his confi- dence. In time, Clyde began to purr and would climb into her lap when she came to visit. Later that same year, a now happier cat, Clyde was adopted into a home of his own. Hendricks, together with fellow vol- unteer Patty Pope, also sew and create cat bed cushions, cat hammocks and pot holders in a variety of styles and patterns which are popular and sold at OCHS’s Thrift Store. The sales help raise funds to support the shelter. Hendricks said that she enjoys the people she volunteers with at the Thrift Store and knowing that she is indeed making a difference for the dogs and cats at the animal shelter.
