SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ WEDNESDAY, APRIL 5, 2017 Three ‘clams’ gets you a buck off chowder this May Heard to speak at City Club April 7 On Friday, April 7, The City Club of Florence, beginning at noon, will host a presentation by Melanie Heard and several of her young associates about CROW, it’s recent activities and upcoming performances including The Addams Family: A New Musical on April 21, 22 and 23. Heard began her perform- ance career at age 2 1⁄2 when she tap danced with a giant Raggedy Andy doll, but her professional arts background stems from the genre of classi- cal ballet. She studied dance with the Joffrey Ballet, Kirov Ballet School in DC, and Ballet West in Utah. Originally from the Los Angeles area, Heard has directed and/or choreographed more than 60 full length shows featuring children and adults, including, “Shrek Jr.,” “Once Upon A Mattress,” “The Little Mermaid Jr.,” “The Music Man Jr.,” “Beauty And The Beast Jr.,” “Seussical Jr.,” “Lend Me A Tenor,” “Steel Magnolias” and others. Heard has played many onstage roles — from a tap dancing chorus girl to “Sally Bowles” in Caberet to the title role in Evita. A credentialed teacher with a Master’s of Education and a former “Teacher of the Year” in Los Angeles, Heard said she believes firmly in the power of a high caliber arts education. She founded CROW in 2011 based on the concept that children and young adults need and deserve the arts, so that they may become respon- sible, contributing members of society. Heard is exceptional- ly grateful for the ever- increasing levels of support for CROW shown by the Florence Community. The City Club meeting will be held at the clubhouse of the Ocean Dunes Golf Links, 3345 Munsel Lake Rd. Lunch and beverages will be available for purchase at 11 a.m. and the presentation will begin at noon. Starlight Cabaret to host Celtic harps, stories The Starlight Cabaret will host Lisa Lynne and Aryeh Frankfurter on April 6, during a special evening of music fea- turing Celtic harps, rare instru- ments and wondrous stories. Lynne and Frankfurter are a multi-instrumentalist duo that play harps, Swedish nyckel- harpa, Ukrainian bandura, bouzouki, cittern and more. They are new residents to Oregon and tour extensively. Both musicians have success- ful recording and performing careers, built from years of street performing and playing other styles of music. Flo Oreg o ce ren They have performed with some of the biggest names in folk and acoustic music and have sold well over a million albums combined. Their music is a mix of tra- ditional and original tunes, with stories and humor mixed in. Doors open at 6 p.m. Music begins 6:30 p.m. at the Florence Unitarian Universalist Fellowship (FUUF), at Highway 101 and Heceta Beach Road. The event is free to the pub- lic but donations are appreciat- ed. By the third weekend of May, Rhododendron Festival organizers hope everyone in Florence will have, and be wearing, one of this year’s Rhododendron Festival but- tons. And this year, there is a deli- cious, old-fashioned benefit that comes with pin ownership. This year’s pin follows the festival’s theme, “Always Ready to Rhody” — a motto borrowed from the Coast Guard’s “Semper Paratus,” or “Always Ready.” In honor of the Coast Guard’s centennial anniversary in Florence, USCG Station Siuslaw River was chosen to be the festival’s honorary parade Rhody buttons inlcude the official 110th anniversary Rhody Festival logo. grand marshals. The festival button features the “Always Ready” motto, an anchor, a patriotic red, white and blue color scheme, and the tradition- al rhododendron bloom. The Florence Area Chamber of Commerce, organizer of the May 19-21 event, is bringing back two of the festival’s past traditions — metal campaign- style buttons and clam chow- der. For many years of their his- tory, the Rhody Festival but- tons were round, enameled, tin pins. More recently, the pins were a smaller metal die-cut shape or a cloisonné-style, and thus more expensive. In an effort to make the but- tons more affordable, the com- mittee is offering the “old-fash- ioned” coated metal pin for $3 this year. Proceeds go toward scholarships for Queen Rhododendra, the King of the Coast and members of the Rhody Court. So what’s the chowder con- nection? As an incentive to purchase buttons, local restau- rants are offering $1 off a bowl of clam chowder to each per- son wearing a 2017 Rhody but- ton through the month of May. Participating restaurants will have a sign posted at their entrance and a participant’s list will be posted at www.Florence Chamber.com. The new Rhody buttons can be purchased from any of the Rhododendron Court mem- bers, merchant button boxes and at the Chamber of Commerce Visitor’s Center, 290 Highway 101. DENTURE SERVICES INC.
