SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ SATURDAY, MARCH 11, 2017 5 A Siuslaw bands warm up Viewfinders announce ‘Photo of the Year’ winners for the spring season The Siuslaw Middle School Beginning, Intermediate, Advanced and Jazz bands and the Siuslaw High School Symphonic Band are launching their spring schedules with a con- cert on March 20 starting at 7 p.m. at the Florence Events Center. In addition to the great music, there will be a raffle for a night at a luxury European-style Bed and Breakfast near Monroe, Oregon. Funds raised will be used to pay for the rental of the Florence Events Center and purchase new sheet music. Come and hear what Florence’s young musicians have been learning in the new year. The Florence Events Center is at 715 Quince Street behind Safeway. Theater doors open at 6:30 p.m. and admission to the event is free. F ebruary was the Siuslaw Viewfinders Camera Club’s 13th annual ban- quet. Along with the usual fes- tivities, there was food at the Elks Club, the installation of new officers and two photo contests. The monthly contest was “Bridges.” First place was taken by Kathleen Wenzel with a striking black and white photo of the Siuslaw River Bridge. On the second Saturday of every September, SAA holds an all-class reunion banquet with a raffle that raises thou- sands of dollars. This enables SAA to offer scholarships to college-bound Siuslaw stu- dents. This year, awards include two $3,500 scholarships from the SAA, a $3,500 scholarship that is an individual gift by an SHS alumnus, and a $1,500 memorial scholarship in honor of Wanda Ziemer Hoberg, a founder and the first treasurer of the SAA.
