SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ WEDNESDAY, MARCH 8, 2017 City Lights to screen documentary on stand-up City Lights Cinemas will be presenting the documentary film, “Dying Laughing,” on Thursday, March 9, at 12:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. Dying Laughing is a candid look inside the agony of mak- ing people laugh for a living. The film stars Jerry Seinfeld, Amy Schumer, Jerry Lewis, Bob Saget, Chris Rock, Jamie Foxx, Sarah Silverman, Steve Coogan, Bobby Lee and the late Gary Shandling. A stand-up comedian must be the writer, director and star performer. There’s no real rehearsal, no practice and no safety net when you’re in front of a live audience. For most people, baring their soul on stage and having an audience “boo” (or worse) at you would become a life- long trauma, but for stand-up comedians it’s a nightly chal- lenge. The funny and heartfelt doc- umentary contains original interviews interlaced with per- sonal footage of life on the road — all from the comedi- an’s point of view. Once you take this step behind the curtain, you wll never look at these funny folks the same way again. Tickets for Dying Laughing are currently available at City Lights Cinema or online at citylightscinemas.com. Tickets are $9 for adults, $8 for seniors and students. Library announces 2016’s ‘Best Books’ list Siuslaw Public Library will present its popular annual Best Books list on Friday, March 10, beginning at 1 p.m., at the main branch of the library in the Bromley Room. This hour-long program is exciting, fast-paced, and cov- ers about 60 books in 60 min- utes. The list of best books is once again prepared by Adult Services Librarian Kevin Mittge. Each year, Mittge solicits recommendations for the list from library patrons, staff, vol- unteers and national critics. And, being a prolific reader himself, he also adds his own favorites. The event is free and all genres are included in the lightning-speed book sum- maries. This fun, annual program is a must for both avid and casu- al readers. Attend the popular program to check the list for the top 2016 favorites. One book that library patrons raved about in 2016 was Liane Siuslaw Valley Fire Rescue (SVFR) and Western Lane Ambulance District (WLAD) are working together to teach a 40-hour Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) certification class to members of SVFR, Swisshome/Deadwood Fire District and Mapleton Fire District. This training is funded through the SVFR SAFER Grant and the WLAD first responder training fund. The training is intended to enhance the capabilities of local first responders to better serve their communities. “This is an example of how partnering with other respond- ing agencies improves the serv- ice to the people we are called to help,” said Fire Chief Jim Langborg, who also mentioned that this demonstrates how much dedication local volun- teers put into becoming fire- fighters and serving their com- munities. The city is pro- viding disposal of yard debris on the third Saturday of each month from March through October. The disposal day in May will be held on the second Saturday, May 13, so as not to conflict with Rhody Days. The current cost to dispose a standard pickup truck load or small utility trailer (single axle or less) of yard debris is $10; medium utility trailer (10-12 feet in length) is $15; and a large utility trailer (greater than 12 feet in length) is $20. For loads larger than 20 cubic yards, the cost is $20 plus $5/yard over. Debris loads must be tied, tarped, secured or covered in the vehicle or trailer in a man- ner that prevents any material from leaving the vehicle or trailer while in motion.
