M . BOYS : 7 P . M . HOSTS With little more than two weeks remaining before district competition (Feb. 10-11), the Viking wrestling team is gearing up for a chance at a state appearance for some of its wrestlers. Chief among them is Richard Huff, wrestling at 113 pounds, whose record of 23-2 bodes well for some time on the state mats. Last weekend at the Sutherlin Invitational, Huff pinned Dayton oppo- nent Noah Mauhew in just 41 seconds in the championship round following pins against Bailey Wentz of Glide (1:44) and Jakob Allen of Douglas (1:27) earlier in the day. This past Tuesday, Huff was among six wrestlers who came away with a win at the Philomath dual meet. While Huff, as well as Eyza Abbas Carrasco, won by forfeit, Siuslaw had four wins by pin: Joaquine Cervantes (145 lbs.), Nick Steinman (170 lbs.), Clark Hooper (182 lbs.) and Matthew Horillo (285 lbs.). Despite Siuslaw’s pins and wins by forfeit, the Warriors managed a slim 39-36 win after claiming the 152- pound and 160-pound matches. Siuslaw will be back on the mats this Wednesday at the Far West League tournament at North Bend, then again that weekend at the multi-divisional Cottage Grove Invitational Feb. 3 and 4. Siuslaw will compete for a chance at the state mats during district competi- tion at South Umpqua Feb. 10 and 11, with top finishers qualifying for state competition Feb. 24 and 25 in Portland. But Douglas (3-1), ranked No. 12 in the 4A division quickly got ahead and stayed there, using its high-pressure defense to limit Viking possessions and control the back- boards for a 61-35 win. That same night, the Far West League’s other two top teams also came away with vic- tories — North Bend over Brookings-Harbor (49-42) and Marshfield over South Umpqua (60-30) — to keep the Lady Pirates at the top of the league at 4-0. Against Douglas, the Lady Viks also got scoring from Claire Waggoner (4), Madison Reynolds (4), 2 points each from Marika White and Nikki Launius, and 1 point from Abby Watkins. Following the girls game, the Viking boys tipped off for what became the team’s sev- enth win in 11 games after a 45-36 defeat of the Trojans.
