SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 18, 2017 3 A Local U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary hosts ‘Change of Watch’ On Saturday, Jan. 14, the local U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary hosted the 2017 Auxiliary Division Five “Change of Watch” at the Best Western in Florence. The annual meeting formal- ly installed newly elected offi- cers while recognizing the many accomplishments and services of Division members. Auxiliary officers, auxiliary command and active-duty Coast Guard command con- verged to attend the time-hon- ored ceremony. The Coast Guard Auxiliary, which is a volunteer organiza- tion, offers public education about boating safety and con- ducts vessel safety checks. It also works side-by-side with active-duty Coast Guard and locally assists Station Siuslaw River with culinary services, engineering, public affairs, safety patrols and station mon- itoring. During the ceremony, Flotillas from Brookings, Depoe Bay, Eugene, Grants Pass, Coos Bay and Yaquina Bay received awards and recognition for achievements in areas such as communica- tions, boating safety and pub- lic education. Florence resident, photogra- pher and Auxiliary Public Affairs Officer Deborah Heldt Cordone was particularly rec- ognized for her extensive work, which included helping to establish the City of Florence as a Coast Guard City. The Coast Guard City appli- cation is currently going up the chain of command and will eventually be sent to Congress for hopeful approval this year. For her various public affairs endeavors, Cordone was awarded the Division’s prestigious Auxiliarist of the Year Award for 2016. Special guests and speakers included Capt. Michael Trimpert, Commander Sector North Bend; Lt. Commander Ben Crowell, Sector North Bend; Senior Chief Boatswain’s Mate Tim Tregoning, Officer in Charge Station Siuslaw River; Chief Boatswain’s Mate Ben Snider, Station Siuslaw River; and District 13 Commodore Kathy Goodwin. During the ceremony, Florence resident and Flotilla Staff Officer Brad Hooper was sworn in as Flotilla 52 Commander and led the Color Guard. Depoe Bay Auxiliarist Curt Lundine was sworn in as Auxiliary Division 5 Commander, relieving Division Commander Dale Yellin of Grants Pass. Each year, auxiliarists who have “Crossed the Bar” during the past year are remembered with the ringing of a special bell for each name read. Chief Ben Snider conducted the ceremony. Coast Guard Auxiliary Division 5 encompasses most of the Oregon Coast and Southern Willamette Valley. With units in all 50 states, as well as Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, American Samoa and Guam, the auxil- iary is a dedicated force multi- plier for the USCG.
