HAMMON—Asa “Jeep” Orrin Hammon, 52, of Florence, was involved in a tragic construction site accident on Wednes- day, Jan. 11, 2017. Siuslaw Valley Fire Asa Hammon and Rescue, Western Lane EMS and the trauma team at Peace Harbor Medical Center worked tireless- ly to save the life of a friend, mentor and colleague, but were unable to resuscitate him. He was a 29-year veteran of the Siuslaw Valley Fire Department when he retired in 2010 as a Battalion Chief. After graduating with the Siuslaw Class of 1983, he joined the U.S. Navy, where he served in the military for four years. He is survived by his son, Kristopher; mother Ardith; brother Charles (Chic); and sis- ter Kristi Bower. He is also the father to his stepchildren Katie Burch, Nicholas Burch, Sara Crook and Mary Richard. Beyond that, he has five nieces and nephews along with seven great-nieces and nephews that loved him very much. In his final days, he was glad to be back in his home town. In lieu of flowers, make a donation to Florence Food Share. A memorial celebration of his life will be held at the Florence Events Center on Saturday, Jan. 21, beginning at 3:30 p.m. Private cremational rites were held through Burns’s Riverside Chapel Florence Funeral Home.
