Siuslaw from 1B game of the season. “We have a great half-court defense, and when we don’t give an opposing team easy buckets on transition points from our own turnovers, we are very hard to score against,” said Perry. Offensively, Siuslaw’s big man, 6-foot-7 junior Trent Reavis, scored 19 points to lead all scoring. The Viks also got points from four other starters, including 7 from junior guard Jake Hickson, 5 points from senior point guard Brogan Cornish, and 4 points each from juniors Jared Brandt and Kyle King. With a 31-20 lead heading into the fourth quarter, Siuslaw saw its lead dwindle as the Lancers’ pressure defense forced a series of turnovers early in the period, closing the gap to 31-33 with 2:04 remain- ing in the game. The Viks called a timeout and came back with the posses- sion, working the clock and slowing down their offense, forcing South Umqua to stop the clock with fouls. Hickson sank 2 freethrows with just over a minute on the clock, stretching Siuslaw’s lead to 35-31. King also sank a pair of freethrows as the clock wound down in favor of Siuslaw, 39- 36. That same night, Marshfield beat Brookings-Harbor in overtime, 45-42, and North Bend slipped by Douglas, 64- 61. The Viks, Pirates and Bulldogs are at the top of the league at 1-0. Last night, Siuslaw was on the road at Marshfield (after press deadlines) and will host Brookings-Harbor on Saturday in a game rescheduled from Friday.
