Gem Walkers announce next jaunt
The Yachats Coastal Gems
invite the public to come along
on Tuesday, Jan. 31, when the
group will be walking the
Lincoln City Town YRE.
This 10K walk has some
hills with generally good foot-
ing. There is also a 5K option.
These walks would be diffi-
cult for wheel chairs and
strollers.
Those wishing to carpool to
Lincoln City should meet at the
Commons in Yachats for a 9
a.m. departure, or meet at the
Cozy Cove Inn in Lincoln City
at 10:15 a.m. to register for the
walk.
As always, leashed pets are
welcome on walks, but bring
water and clean-up materials
for pets. A sturdy 6-foot leash,
not the retractable type, is
required.
On Wednesday, Feb. 1, there
will be a monthly meeting at
the home of the club president
in Yachats.
The meeting will begin at 6
p.m. Those who would like to
attend can call for directions.
This will be the annual choco-
late sharing meeting; bring a
favorite chocolate treat.
For more information or
directions, call Maryann
Brown in Waldport at 541-961-
4279 or visit the club website
at www.yachatscoastalgems

Siuslaw’s Trent Reavis (left) wins the tipoff against South Umpqua’s Justice Cole.
Siuslaw
from 1B
game of the season.
“We have a great half-court
defense, and when we don’t
give an opposing team easy
buckets on transition points
from our own turnovers, we
are very hard to score against,”
said Perry.
Offensively, Siuslaw’s big
man, 6-foot-7 junior Trent
Reavis, scored 19 points to
lead all scoring.
The Viks also got points
from four other starters,
including 7 from junior guard
Jake Hickson, 5 points from
senior point guard Brogan
Cornish, and 4 points each
from juniors Jared Brandt and
Kyle King.
With a 31-20 lead heading
into the fourth quarter, Siuslaw
saw its lead dwindle as the
Lancers’ pressure defense
forced a series of turnovers
early in the period, closing the
gap to 31-33 with 2:04 remain-
ing in the game.
The Viks called a timeout
and came back with the posses-
sion, working the clock and
slowing down their offense,
forcing South Umqua to stop
the clock with fouls.
Hickson sank 2 freethrows
with just over a minute on the
clock, stretching Siuslaw’s
lead to 35-31.
King also sank a pair of
freethrows as the clock wound
down in favor of Siuslaw, 39-
36.
That same night, Marshfield
beat Brookings-Harbor in
overtime, 45-42, and North
Bend slipped by Douglas, 64-
61.
The Viks, Pirates and
Bulldogs are at the top of the
league at 1-0.
Last night, Siuslaw was on
the road at Marshfield (after
press deadlines) and will host
Brookings-Harbor on Saturday
in a game rescheduled from
Friday.
Tipoff is at 3 p.m.
