SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ SATURDAY, JANUARY 14, 2017 OBITUARIES SWARZ—Linda Jo Henning Swarz, 70, formerly of Florence, passed away Jan. 4, 2017, a day before her 71st birthday. Linda grew up in the Cleveland, Ohio area and graduat- ed from Wo o s t e r College in Ohio in 1968. L i n d a married the Linda Swarz one and only man in her life, Gary Swarz, in 1970. She and Gary moved to Florence in the mid 1990s after enjoying life and work adventures in Texas, Arizona and Portland, Ore. Those who knew the couple will remember them for their continued adventures in the Harley world, motorhome trav- els, Rhododendron Club, menagerie of birds and many, many other collectibles. Linda was an avid seeker of the blown glass floats the first year they were introduced for discovery in the Florence area, finding a record number. After Gary’s death in 2010, Linda joined the Rotary Club of Florence, Florence Tennis Center, Coastal Fitness and thoroughly enjoyed her friends’ company for coffee dates and for shopping. She was known for her flare for fashion, accessorized with unique shoes, jewelry and hats that only Linda could pull off. And let us not forget her always artfully painted finger- nails that she loved to show off. Linda moved to Glastonbury, CT., in early 2015 to be closer to her sister and her family. There, she became involved in the CT Audubon Society, Chamber of Commerce, two book clubs, art lessons, spirited group discus- sions on current events and volunteered working the polls for three elections. “Remember me with a smile, celebrate our friendship, keep memories of me in your heart.” PHILLIPS—Liberty Belle (Haines) Phillips, formerly of Florence, passed away Jan. 10, 2017. Liberty was born Nov. 11, 1918, in Astoria, Ore., on the day WW1 ended. Her grandfa- ther thought she should be named Liberty Belle because of that. She married Gerald Phillips in 1937, and was a homemaker. Liberty and G e r a l d enjoyed camping and deer hunting with the family. She was able to at Liberty Phillips stay home with her dog, Morty like she want- ed. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald Phillips; her daughter-in-law, Suzzann Phillips; and grandson Carl Phillips. She is survived by her sons: Gerald Phillips and Ernest Phillips and his wife Ginger Phillips; grandchildren Jerry and Sheryl Phillips, Tony and Melissa Phillips, and Cheryl and Dave Waddington; great- grandchildren Kevin and Lindsey Phillips, Kyle Phillips, Jeri Lynn and Kyle Busenitz, Katie and Cameron Burke, Cody and Mickie Waddington and Cole Waddington; great- great-grandchildren Kyler and Gracie Busenitz and Sutton Burke. Liberty will be buried next to Gerald at Alsea, Ore., during a graveside service at the Alsea Cemetery on Saturday, Jan. 21, beginning at noon. Burns’s Riverside Chapel Florence Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. HAMMON—Asa O. Hammon, 53, of Florence, passed away Jan. 11, 2017. A memorial celebration of his life will be held Saturday, Jan. 21, beginning at 3:30 p.m., at the Florence Events Center. Arrangements are being held through Burns’s Riverside Chapel Florence Funeral Home. CRAVER—William (Bill) Craver passed away Jan. 10, 2017. Family and friends will gather at Driftwood Shores’ Surfside Restaurant on Jan. 18 at 3 p.m. to celebrate his amaz- ing life. New Year’s baby, family receives gift from hospital volunteers PeaceHealth Peace Harbor Volunteers welcomed this year’s first baby of the year, Aliana McLauchan, born to Lillian Pellicier and Andrew McLauchan. Aliana was born at 2 a.m. at PeaceHealth Peace Harbor Medical Center and weighed in at 6 pounds, 12 ounces, and was 18.5 inches long. The newborn and her family were presented with a hand- made layette from Tuesday Workshop Committee Chair Denise Dimeglio.
