Jan. 13 • SHS BB HOSTS Viking junior wrestler Richard Huff improved to 15-3 for the season after sweeping the 120-pound bracket at the Alsea Bay Classic in Waldport on Saturday. Huff was one of three Siuslaw wrestlers to finish in the top four, with seniors Nick Steinman (170 pounds) and Kainan Lane (285 pounds) fin- ished fourth and second, respectively. At 120 pounds, Huff had two pins and a major decision at the meet, dom- inating his weight class and winning the title round over Kalvin Ruth of Newport in just 17 seconds by pin. Huff began the day with a 20-7 deci- sion over Symon Thurman of Lowell, then pinned Arnoldo Ortiz in 4:24 to advance to the finals against Ruth. Siuslaw News Despite the challenge of bitter weather conditions, Siuslaw’s bowling teams were on the lanes Saturday in Florence and North Bend, with the var- sity boys away and the girls and varsi- ty 2 boys at home. “With the bad weather, the turnout was light at both tournaments but everyone still competed very well,” said Dusty Anderson, manager of Holiday Bowl in Florence and bowling teams’ coordinator. In North Bend, the varsity boys took second place to the host Bulldogs. In Florence, both the varisty girls and JV 2 boys team took first place in See BOWLERS 3C Viking basketball to open FWL at home Friday B Y N ED H ICKSON Siuslaw News Siuslaw’s basketball teams had their final pre-season tournament showing over the weekend, battling bad weather on the road before battling teams on the hardwood last Friday and Saturday at the Skyline/Far West Crossover Tournament. Friday night, the Lady Vikings were narrowly plucked by the Pelicans in a low-scoring matchup with Klamath Falls, 39-35. The cold weather was reflected in Siuslaw’s shooting, which was 24 percent from the field after going 12-for-50. Freethrow shooting was a little better, with the Lady Viks shooting 50 percent (9-of-18 attempts.) See Steelhead The Salmon River opened for wild and hatch- ery steelhead is open. Wild winter steelhead can be retained on the Salmon River. Daily and annual bag limit on wild winter steel- head are 1/day and 3/year.
