This year was no exception, with more than two dozen runners, joggers, walkers and strollers of all ages gathered under the Siuslaw River Bridge on Sunday to contin- ue the tradition. When the 3.1-mile run ended, participants stuck around to share stories and hot drinks at Siuslaw River Coffee Roasters. “As always, there was no entry fee, no motorized things, no training, no racing and definitely no complain- ing,” said Archer. For the Viking boys, the 57-40 victo- ry was the second win in the last three matchups, improving them to 3-6, equalling the girls’ team record for the season as both teams heading into league next Tuesday. The Lady Viks had trouble even before arriving on the hardwood, thanks to their bus breaking down on the highway en route to Corbett for their sixth consecutive game on the road. Brittany Long lead the Lady Viks in scoring with 13 points, followed by Destinie Tatum with 10, Claire Waggoner with 6, Nikki Launius and Alyssa Richards with 3 points each, 2 points from Annabell Tupua, and 1 point from Abby Watkins. Tatum had a team-high 12 rebounds, including 7 off of the offensive glass. Results from the boys game were unavailable. This weekend, both teams will be on the road again, this time at Douglas High School, for the Sky-Em/Far West Crossover Tournament. On Friday, Jan. 6, the Viking boys kick things off at 10 a.m. with a matchup against Hidden Valley, fol- lowed at 10 a.m. with the girls tipping off at 10:30 a.m. against Phoenix. Saturday, the Vikings tip off against Phoenix at 9 a.m., with the Lady Viks taking on North Valley at 11:15 a.m. Tuesday, Siuslaw opens the Far West League season at home against South Umpqua. Girls tip off at 6 p.m., fol- lowed by the boys at 7:30 p.m. Viks battle big at Elmira multi-school meet B Y N ED H ICKSON Siuslaw News Even though the Viks only had five wrestlers on the mats at Elmira High School’s multi-school dual wrestling tournament, Siuslaw head coach Neil Wartnik said he was pleased with his wrestlers’ performances. “The team wrestled great,” Wartnik said. “Especially in our final two dual matches.” Richard Huff, wrestling at 126 pounds, won all three of his matches, pinning Bryce Porter of Sweet Home in just 1:10, then hammering Elmira’s Hunter Davis 21-5. Huff ended the day by pinning Theodore Coombs of Sheldon in just 41 seconds. At 145 pounds, Joaquin Cervantes went 2-2, including winning by a 14- 11 decision over Levi Hernandez of Sweet Home and pinning Max Harsch of Elmira in 1:38. Jesus Sierra, wrestling at 152 pounds, also went 2-2, scoring pins against Noah Moore of Sweet Home (3:29) and Logan Shoemaker of Elmira (1:49). Nick Steinman dominated the 170- pound bracket, going 2-1 and pinning his first two opponents — John Rasmussen (Forest Grove) and Mikey Montgomery (Elmira) before losing by a narrow decision in the finals to Brayden Smith of Sheldon, 8-6. Kainan Lane was 1-1 on the day after pinning Alam Castro of Forest grove in 1:13, then losing by pin to Dylan Porter of Elmira late in the third round. Tomorrow, Siuslaw will be at Brookings for a Far West League dual meet, beginning at noon. teams will include Brookings-Harbor, Douglas, Camas Valley, Marshfield, North Bend and South Umpqua. Saturday, Siuslaw will compete at the 17-team multi-divisional Alsea Bay Classic in Waldport. Siuslaw’s next home meet will be Saturday, Jan. 14, for the annual Nick Lutz Memorial Invitational. Teams will include Brookings-Harbor, Churchill, Crow, Junction City, Lincoln City, South Umpqua and Taft. Siltcoos and Tahkenitch lakes are closed to wild coho fishing SIUSLAW RIVER: Chinook The Siuslaw River and bay is open for Chinook salmon. Fishing is slow. Trolling herring in the lower bay is an effective technique. Eggs and bob- ber can be productive in the upper bay and river. ALSEA RIVER AND BAY: Chinook, steelhead The Alsea River and bay is open for Chinook salmon. Fishing is slow.
