SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 7, 2016 3 A Signups being taken for Coast Guard conducts pyrotechnics training annual TRCR job fair Plans are underway for the annual Community Job Fair on Thursday, March 23, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., hosted by Three Rivers Casino Resort. This fair will be free to attendees, businesses and community partners. Last year’s event was well received with 28 vendors rep- resented and an estimated 300 participants attending. Local businesses and appli- cants know the challenges when applying for jobs and locating resources. Three Rivers aims to bring all those parties and resources together to form a network in the local community by utiliz- ing its marketing experience and contacts to publicize this For those who may have seen unusual flares in the sky or orange plumes of smoke on the Siuslaw River last Wednesday morning near the North Jetty, the explanation was simple: Coast Guard Station Siuslaw River members were conducting pyrotechnics training at the jetty’s dive entry. Training included classroom instruction prior to live exercis- es. The training, facilitated by Boatswain’s Mate First Class (BM1) Nielsen and Boatswain’s Mate Second Class (BM2) Marshall, provid- ed an opportunity for boat crew to practice the discharge of pyrotechnics from the water and to observe different types of discharged canisters. Whether on a Coast Guard asset, commercial fishing ves- sel or recreational boat, visual distress signals are part of a boat’s safety equipment. There are a variety of signals, includ- event so that there is a large pool of attendees. The following businesses have already committed to participating: Driftwood Shores, Fred Meyer, Lane Community College, Les Schwab, Oregon Department of Transportation, Siuslaw Valley Fire & Rescue, Spruce Point Assisted Living, Three Rivers Casino Resort, Confederates Tribes of Coos, Lower Umpqua and Siuslaw Indians, Northwest Youth Corps and Western Lane Ambulance District. For more information or to sign up to participate, contact Pam Hickson at 541-902- 6504. Check them for condition and expiration dates before you leave harbor. Their intended purpose is to summon help should the need arise and should only be displayed when immediate or potential danger exists. Visual distress signals can only be effective when some- one is in a position to see them. Therefore, when employing pyrotechnic devices, do so only when you see or hear a boat or airplane, or when you are rea- sonably sure someone is in position to see the signal. Training and good judgment are an essential part of the suc- cessful use of visual distress signals.
