2 A SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 7, 2016 MARLEY—Barbara Jane Marley, 91, of Florence, passed from the confines of this earth Sunday morning, Dec. 4, 2016, while in her res- idence at Spruce Point Assisted Living. Born Aug. 4, 1925, in Burbank, Calif., to parents William Frank and A d a h B l a c k Brown, Barbara was the youngest of five Barbara children. Marley After graduating from Canoga Park High School in 1943 and working briefly with her parents at Americraft, they all moved to Days Creek, Ore. During WWII, she attended nurse’s training at Seattle Pacific in Seattle, Wash., and subse- quently trained at Swedish Hospital, also in Seattle. In 1953, Barbara returned to Oregon with her young daugh- ter and worked at the Lindell Medical Clinic in Roseburg Ore., from 1953 to 1965. After that, she undertook the great three-year adventure of pur- chasing and operating the well known Dry Creek Store locat- ed on Oregon’s jewel, the North Umpqua River, 50 miles east of Roseburg. After a second stint at the Lindell Clinic, she retired in 1976 and discovered Florence, where she lived with great joy in the Greentrees community. Barbara was a woman of great enthusiasm and talents who loved — and was loved by — many people. She never met a stranger, allowing her to successfully run businesses that included Tail Wagger dog grooming and boarding ken- nels in Florence, which she owned and operated with her partner and long-time friend, Dorothy “Sam” Hopkins. Her energies and interests lead to her service on the boards of several community organizations, including work with the Florence Humane Society’s improvement efforts. Her love of sports was leg- endary. She was a passionate Dodgers, Mariners, Seahawks and Ducks fan. She also enjoyed tennis and golf, play- ing both with some success and much enjoyment. She was involved in music, playing the cello, piano, singing in various church choirs and finding a dance floor whenever one was avail- able. But, it was her brilliant smile and ability to attract peo- ple that made Barbara stand out in any crowd. Those who knew her will always remember this fun lov- ing and fiercely independent woman with much admiration and love. She was preceded in death by her brothers and sister. She is survived by her daughter, Judith (Warren) Haworth of Eugene, Ore.; granddaughter Katrina Jett of Acworth, Ga.; great-grand- children: Brittany Jett, Kellin Jett and Kameron Jett, also of Acworth, Ga.; and several beloved nieces and nephews.
